ISU: No quick refunds for Harkin Institute donors

News

February 7th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Donors who pledged $3.3 million to support an Iowa State University institute honoring Sen. Tom Harkin shouldn’t expect quick refunds now that he’s abandoned plans to house his papers there. ISU Foundation spokeswoman Karen Simon said Wednesday the group will keep those donations until the Board of Regents decides the Harkin Institute of Public Policy’s future. The institute appears likely to close or be overhauled after Harkin’s decision Tuesday backing out of plans to donate papers covering his 40 years in Washington to ISU.

If it becomes necessary, Simon says the foundation will review all institute pledges and gifts accepted and “then examine and exercise what remedies may be appropriate.” Institute fundraiser and former Lt. Gov. Sally Pederson says she can’t imagine the foundation will try to keep the donations.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Anna Prins scored 19 points, Nikki Moody added 15 and No. 25 Iowa State rolled to a 67-48 victory at Big 12 Conference foe Texas on Wednesday night. Brynn Williamson chipped in 12 points, all from 3-point range, and a team-high seven rebounds for the Cyclones (16-5, 7-4), who shot 49 percent from the floor and were 10 of 24 from beyond the arc. Moody dished out seven assists and had four steals.

Empress Davenport had 13 points for the Longhorns (9-12, 2-8), and Celina Rodrigo and Chassidy Fussell scored 10 apiece. Texas, which entered the game ranked eighth in Division I with a plus-10.9 rebounding margin, was outrebounded 32-31. The Longhorns scored the game’s first basket, but that was their only lead. Texas closed within 25-24 on Fussell’s fast-break layup with 4:27 left before halftime, but Iowa State closed the half on a 14-0 run and cruised from there.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Ben Brust scored 18 points, including three key free throws in double overtime, as Wisconsin beat Iowa 74-70 Wednesday night. Jared Berggren added 16 points and 14 rebounds for the Badgers (16-7, 7-3 Big Ten), who snapped a three-game losing streak to the Hawkeyes. Mike Gesell led Iowa (14-9, 3-7) with 14 points and Aaron White added 13.

Wisconsin, which has shot less than 62 percent from the foul line this season, converted 13 of 14 free throws in the two overtime periods. With Wisconsin leading 72-68 in the closing seconds, Berggren stepped out of bounds on the inbounds play, giving the ball back to the Hawkeyes. White scored and was fouled, but he missed the free throw. Ryan Evans, who shoots 40 percent from the line, grabbed the rebound, was fouled and converted both attempts to seal the win.

K-State signs touted IWCC QB Waters

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Once heir apparent to Heisman Trophy finalist Collin Klein, Kansas State quarterback Daniel Sams will face some serious competition thanks to the signing of junior college transfer Jake Waters. Out of all 32 members of the recruiting class announced by Kansas State on Wednesday, Waters might spark the most interest. He directed Iowa Western Community College to a national championship last season, passing for 3,501 yards.

Prior to Waters’ commitment, many had considered Sams the favorite for the starting job in 2013. The addition of Waters makes that much less certain — and that is exactly the way Kansas State coach Bill Snyder wants it.
