Atlantic City Council passes 1st reading of amended zoning ordinance

News

February 6th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

The Atlantic City Council Wednesday evening, passed the first reading of an amendment to the City’s Zoning Ordinance, which would allow changing the Zoning classification of some lots in the Southern Heights 2nd Addition, from R-2 (Low Density/Single Family) to R-4 (Multi-family). The vote followed a public hearing, during which there were comments from Don Sonntag, the local developer who proposes the construction of multi-family homes, with half of them being upscale rental units, running about $750 to $800 per month.  Sonntag says there are still numerous steps remaining before construction could begin, even if the Council does approve the Zoning change.

One of those steps would be his application to the City for a TIF – Tax Increment Financing- District, to make the project “Cash Flow.” The second, and next step, is an “Official” approval of the site plan. The City’s Planning and Zoning Commission has provided a verbal approval of the plan, but Sonntag said he needs to invest $7,500 to nail down the grade, elevation, sewer and water, and other such details.

Sonntag, who spoke in the third person when referring to concerns about what would happen if his health deteriorated and he wasn’t able to follow-through with plans to construct in an R-4 zone, or, if there is enough objection to the rezoning.  He said he would be willing to stipulate in the agreement, that it could be rezoned back to R-2. And, if he wasn’t able to move forward, the ground could still be used for someone who wishes to construct a 24 or 30-unit apartment house. Properties to the east and west of the proposed development are already zoned R-4.

Earlier in the meeting, the Council discussed traffic flow concerns on 19th Street, west of Redwood Drive, as it pertains to the rezoning of the parcel. Mayor Dave Jones says the concerns were addressed at a couple of recent meetings of the City’s Planning and Zoning Commission. He says prior to word getting out about the proposed zoning change, there were no known problems with 19th Street, and that includes issues affecting police, and/or fire and rescue.

Jones said he wants the Community Development Committee to review the recommendations from the Police and Fire Chief, along with Medivac Ambulance and others, before any decision is made on the future of 19th Street, including whether it should be made a thoroughfare, and connected to Olive Street to alleviate any real or perceived traffic problems.

Head of veterans home seeks better PTSD treatment

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The head of a state veteran’s home says vets need better access to treatment for post-traumatic stress disorders coupled with substance abuse. Last session, the Legislature asked David Worley, head of the Iowa Veterans Home, to study the need for a treatment program for veterans diagnosed with disorders related to post-traumatic stress disorder , or PTSD.

Worley told House lawmakers Wednesday there is a need, and he stressed that many veterans have difficulty getting to Marshalltown to seek treatment. Legislators didn’t discuss how much a new program would cost, but Worley says federal and state grants might be available. Worley says on average, 20 percent of all combat veterans are eventually diagnosed with PTS which leads to illegal substance abuse.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — A school superintendent says Iowa State University’s athletic director was removed from a high school basketball game after criticizing a referee’s call. Marty Lucas, superintendent for the Colfax-Mingo school district, says Jamie Pollard was asked to leave a game Tuesday night between Colfax-Mingo High School and Gilbert High School. Pollard’s son plays for Gilbert.

Lucas says the referee heard Pollard disagree with a game call during a timeout. The referee asked school officials to remove Pollard. Lucas says Pollard did not yell or use foul language. The incident happened toward the end of the game. Lucas says it was a heated game and Pollard was “a dad being a dad.” Iowa State spokesman Tom Kroeschell confirms Pollard was removed but declined further comment. Colfax-Mingo won 68-55.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz never pays much attention to recruiting rankings. That’s a trait that could serve him well this week. The Hawkeyes announced their latest class on Wednesday, a group that recruiting services have rated near the bottom of the Big Ten. The 21-player class is ranked 52nd nationally by both Rivals.com and Scout.com. Rivals has the class slotted eighth in the 12-school league while Scout ranks it 10th.

Those aren’t the kind of numbers likely to entice a fan base that watched Iowa finished last season with six straight losses and a 4-8 record. But coach Kirk Ferentz said he couldn’t tell much difference between this year’s class and last year’s — which was ranked in the top half of the Big Ten. The list of recruits is as follows:

Nathan Bazata, dt, 6-2, 280, Howells (Neb.) High.

Ike Boettger, te, 6-6, 235, Cedar Falls (Iowa) High.

LeShun Daniels, rb, 6-0, 215, Harding (Ohio) High.

Colin Goebel, ol, 6-5, 280, Naperville North (Ill.) High.

Maurice Jones won’t play for Iowa State

Sports

February 6th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Point guard Maurice Jones won’t play for Iowa State next season after the Cyclones lost an appeal with the NCAA over his eligibility. Iowa State spokesman Mike Green says Jones wasn’t academically eligible to play when he left USC in early September. The Cyclones signed Jones to a financial aid agreement in October, and the school had hoped to restore Jones’ eligibility by the second semester of next season. Green says the NCAA cited Jones’ previous ineligibility in denying the appeal. Jones averaged 13 points and 3.5 assists as a sophomore for the Trojans last season.

The Cyclones moved quickly to fill the void, signing Northeast (Neb.) Community College point guard K.J. Bluford. Bluford is averaging 18 points a game this season.

DYERSVILLE, Iowa (AP) — Actor Matthew Perry is investing in a youth sports complex at an eastern Iowa farm where “Field of Dreams” was filmed. Go the Distance Baseball LLC announced Wednesday that the “Friends” star is part of a group of investors that includes Hall of Fame third baseman Wade Boggs. It’s unclear how much Perry is contributing to the project. A Go the Distance spokeswoman behind the All-Star Ballpark Heaven says the actor approached them after the 1989 movie site’s sale was announced.

Go the Distance plans to transform the state landmark into a 24-field youth baseball and softball tournament complex. The first tournament games are scheduled for 2014. The project’s groundbreaking is tentatively scheduled for May. Perry is expected to attend.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State has landed a highly regarded high school lineman and two players from the national junior college championship team as part of its 25-member 2013 recruiting class. Jake Campos, a 6-foot-7, 260-pound offensive lineman, is considered the top prospect that coach Paul Rhoads has signed in his five recruiting classes at ISU.

Campos played at West Des Moines Valley High School, which is about 40 miles from the Iowa State campus. He originally committed to Missouri, but changed his mind during a visit to ISU on Dec. 1. Defensive end Rodney Coe and running back Aaron Wimberly signed with Iowa State out of Iowa Western Community College, which won the NJCAA championship. Wimberly, who rushed for 1,125 yards and 13 touchdowns last season, also had offers from Iowa, Penn State, Boise State and TCU.

Iowa GOP lawmakers back bill restricting abortions

News

February 6th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Republican lawmakers are introducing legislation that would outlaw abortion and allow prosecution of doctors in Iowa. Rep. Tom Shaw, of Laurens, says he’s trying to protect human life, whether “you’re a zygote, an infant, a teenager or an adult.” The bill he introduced Wednesday would prohibit abortion from the moment of conception. Doctors who perform abortions could be charged with murder. Shaw says he believes the bill wouldn’t violate the U.S. Constitution, but Jill June, president of Planned Parenthood of the Heartland, disagreed. She calls the bill an extreme attempt to restrict abortion and says it would clearly be unconstitutional. The bill’s prospects in the House are unclear, and it likely would face problems in the Senate, where Democrats hold a majority.
