DALLAS (AP) — Brittney Griner scored 31 points and top-ranked Baylor won its third consecutive Big 12 tournament championship, rolling past No. 23 Iowa State 75-47 Monday night. In a matchup of the Big 12’s top two seeds, the Lady Bears (32-1) and their 6-foot-8 senior star easily earned another trophy in their dominating run through the conference. Now the defending national champions can turn their attention toward the biggest prize.

Griner, already a two-time All-American, had 23 points by halftime, outscoring Iowa State by 10 on our own. Odyssey Sims added 20 points for Baylor. Anna Prins had 20 points for the Cyclones (23-8), who were playing in their first Big 12 title game since 2007.

Along with the last three Big 12 tournament titles, Baylor has gone undefeated through the league the last two regular seasons for a 49-game conference winning streak.

William Kautter sentenced to probation for Atlantic arson

An Omaha man charged with felony 1st degree arson and six felony charges of Attempt to Commit murder will not face any prison time. According to court documents, 27-year old William C. Kautter appeared in Cass County District Court Monday and plead guilty to an amended charge of Arson in the 2nd degree. The remaining charges were dismissed. Judge Timothy O’Grady ordered Kautter to be committed to the Director of the Iowa Department of Corrections for a period not to exceed 10-years, and fined $1,000. The judge then suspended both the sentence and fine, and ordered the man placed on two-years of supervised probation. Kautter was ordered to pay all related court costs, attorney’s fees, and restitution to his victims, not to exceed $1,800 altogether. He was given credit for time already served. Kautter’s 29-year old wife Elizabeth was also facing a felony 1st degree arson charge, but those charges were previously dismissed.  All charges stem from a Dec. 2010 residential fire at 601 E. 6th Street, in Atlantic.

The homeowners, Myron and Jolynne Gill, along with one of their adult children and three juveniles, were in the home at the time, but all escaped without injury. Investigators determined gasoline was splashed across the front door and porch of the house and then set aflame. Complaints and Affidavits filed in coordination with the arrest of William and Elizabeth Kautter said prior to the fire, William Kautter had made several harassing phone calls, threatened physical harm and death to the Gill family. In addition, cell phone records showed the Kautter’s had traveled to Iowa from Omaha the night of the fire, and, Elizabeth Kautter was seen purchasing gasoline at an Atlantic area gas station on December 14th, 2010.

Cass County Dan Feistner said the charges were based on strong circumstantial evidence, but there was literally no “smoking gun” tying the defendants to the crime. It was more of a “Connect the dots” type investigation that took place over a long period of time. He said there was an ongoing feud between the defendants and the victims, which is not in dispute, but there is a long “Back story,” including the dealing of drugs, that would not have been a benefit in prosecuting the case.

Strip club oversight bill gets Iowa House approval

News

March 11th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Legislation giving Iowa cities more authority to regulate strip clubs easily won the support of the state House. Lawmakers approved the measure in an 89-10 vote on Monday. The bill would allow cities to pass ordinances prohibiting nudity in establishments in their jurisdiction. Iowa strip clubs are already subject to some limits set by city zoning laws and sales tax rules barring the sale of alcohol by businesses that allow public nudity.

The state Supreme Court ruled in a split decision last year that a city of Hamburg ordinance prohibiting nude dancing and alcohol consumption at sexually oriented businesses and requiring seminude employees to remain 6 feet from customers conflicted with a state law that superseded it. But the court didn’t declare all such restrictions unconstitutional.

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say surveillance video from a fatal Council Bluffs house fire in February shows the homeowner’s estranged husband entering the house before it caught fire. The Council Bluffs Police Department says the video shows 43-year-old Mark Vander Woude backing into the house’s driveway with a van on Feb. 25. A fire begins several minutes later. Woude died in the fire, which damaged the entire house. No one else was home at the time.

Investigators believe Woude broke into the house through a back door, and brought in flammable liquids after opening the garage door. Woude once shared the house with his wife and their three children. Police say the couple had separated, and his wife had a protection order against him.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny has had surgery to repair a ruptured disk in his lower back. Matheny had the procedure on Monday in St. Louis. Before leaving the team on Sunday, Matheny said he expected to be back at spring training for Thursday’s game against Atlanta in Jupiter. The 42-year-old Matheny, who replaced Tony La Russa as manager after the 2011 season, said early in spring training that the injury probably traces back to his days as a big league catcher from 1994-06.

Bench coach Mike Aldrete is managing the team in Matheny’s absence.

MVC commissioner irate over CBS blackout

March 11th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The commissioner of the Missouri Valley Conference says he would rather have the tournament title game televised on the Food Network if CBS can’t guarantee it will televise the entire game nationally. Doug Elgin told The Associated Press on Monday that central and northern Illinois and all of Indiana didn’t see the conclusion of Creighton’s 68-65 nail-biter over Wichita State. Wichita State’s Malcolm Armstead missed a potential tying 3-pointer just before the buzzer Sunday.

CBS switched some viewers to the start of Indiana’s victory at Michigan for the Big Ten title. The 10-team Missouri Valley has four schools in the areas that missed the finish of the championship game — Bradley, Illinois State, Indiana State and Evansville. CBS officials did not immediately return a message Monday.

ISU looks to end its Big 12 tournament futility

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State snapped a seven-year NCAA tournament drought in 2012 and could earn another bid on Sunday night. But there’s still one postseason losing streak the Cyclones desperately want to end. It’s been eight years since Iowa State won a game in the Big 12 tournament. It’s a run of futility that stretches back three coaches and three different host cities; Dallas, Oklahoma City and Kansas City.

The Cyclones (21-10, 11-7 Big 12) return to Kansas City to play Oklahoma on Thursday. They’re hoping that, for the first time since 2005, they won’t have to head straight home after the opening game.

Officials with the Iowa State Patrol say a Georgia man suffered possible, unknown injuries during an accident involving a tractor-trailer Sunday morning on Interstate 80, near Underwood. The Iowa State Patrol reports 59 year old Melvin Cuffee of Decatur, GA was traveling eastbound on I-80 near the 13.45 mile marker when he lost control of the 2012 Freightliner. The semi and trailer were both damaged in the accident, which took place around 10:05-am Sunday. Cuffee was transported by Underwood Rescue to Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, where he was examined for possible injuries. The Patrol says Cuffee was wearing his seat belt, which saved his life.
