Drake downs Indiana State 67-56, wins 3rd in row

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) — Richard Carter scored 15 points and Seth VanDeest had 14 as Drake won its third straight game, defeating Indiana State 67-56 on Wednesday night. Jordan Clarke added 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Bulldogs (14-15, 7-10 Missouri Valley), and Ben Simons had 10 points and seven rebounds in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Indiana State (17-12, 9-8) got 13 points from Jake Odum, 12 from RJ Mahurin and 10 from Dawon Cummings. The Sycamores, who have a pair of wins this season over Top-25 programs (Wichita State and Creighton) and had been 7-1 at home in conference play, have lost four of their last five games.

Drake took control of the game with 11 straight points to close the first half, giving it a 27-21 lead at the break. Carter extended the margin to eight points with a layup to start the second half and the Bulldogs stretched the lead to as many as 15 points down the stretch.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Cedar Rapids police have arrested four men in connection with the shooting death of a former women’s basketball standout last September. Police announced the arrests yesterday — five months after the death of 19-year-old Latasha Roundtree. She was shot a few blocks west of Interstate 380 on 16th Avenue. Roundtree played basketball for Cedar Rapids Washington.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Two days after withdrawing his resignation, the Cedar Falls school superintendent has quit. KWWL reports that Mike Wells resigned at a school board meeting last night after several board members tried to fire him. Wells asked the board to let him resign at the end of the school year after board members made a motion to terminate his contract, and the board agreed. On Monday, Wells submitted a resignation letter, but reconsidered after talking with school board members.

CLINTON, Iowa (AP) — The superintendent of Clinton schools is crediting a school nurse for reviving an employee who was found unresponsive outside. Superintendent Deb Olson says a parent arriving yesterday morning at Eagle Heights Elementary found the employee on a sidewalk. That’s when Emily Randolph used an external defibrillator to revive the man, who was rushed to a hospital.

No. 23 Iowa State women roll past Kansas 83-68

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Chelsea Poppens had 22 points and 11 rebounds, Nikki Moody added 12 points and 10 assists, and No. 23 Iowa State rolled to an 83-68 victory over Kansas on Wednesday night. Hallie Christofferson scored 20 points and Anna Prins had 19 for the Cyclones (20-6, 11-5 Big 12), who used a 13-0 second-half run to break open a close game. Iowa State outrebounded Kansas 43-29. Angel Goodrich had 21 points, nine assists and seven rebounds for the Jayhawks (16-11, 7-9), and Monica Engelman scored 20 points.

The Jayhawks pulled within 60-57 on Asia Boyd’s layup with 11:04 to play, but Christofferson hit a 3-pointer to spark Iowa State’s 13-0 run and put the game out of reach. Poppens capped the run with two free throws, and Kansas never got closer than seven points down after that. Kansas still holds a 45-29 edge in the all-time series between the schools.

Report says most wind energy goes to distant cities

A report from the Center for Rural Affairs finds those giant wind turbines that dot the farmland skyline are helping power distant cities, not rural homes. Johnathan Hladik, the center’s energy policy advocate, says major power lines are -not- connected to the areas where the wind power is generated. Hladik says, “We’re finding that all of the important, big transmission lines that can move a lot of capacity, the kind of capacity we need, are far away from the rural areas that are home to all of our wind turbines.”

Iowa ranks third in the nation for wind energy production, behind Texas and California. Under the old model of generation, power plants were located close to the population areas they serve. Now, utilities are finding it difficult to locate new plants in heavily-populated areas. Hladik says the study found only a few miles of the modern, major power lines are located close to the wind turbines. “Only 6% of the lines 400 kilovolts and above are located in the top ten states for wind energy potential and most of those states are in the upper Midwest and the Great Plains areas,” Hladik says. “But even more importantly, less than 1% of the lines over 600 kilovolts are located in these areas. That’s only nine miles.”

Hladik says making a more efficient use of infrastructure now in place is a critical first step, and to make major improvements, it will take some creative partnerships. “It’s not only the job of individual utilities and public utility commissions in each state to recognize the problem and to recognize what we need to do to tap our wind resources, but the onus also falls on states working together, on regional collaboratives,” he says. The utilities need to come up with plans to move more power over a more efficient energy grid, he says, to insure a clean energy future and more jobs. Two Juveniles Arrested for Theft

The Red Oak Police Department reports that two juveniles were arrested for theft on Wednesday. Seventeen-year old Amithist Chyane Clemmons and 13-year old Faith Leeann Clemmons of Red Oak were arrested Wednesday for Theft/5th Degree. No bond was set and both girls were released to their parents.

JOANNE GRAEVE, 78, of Earling died Wed., Feb., 27th at Myrtue Medical Center. A Mass of Christian Burial service for JOANNE GRAEVE will be held 11:00-AM Sat., Mar., 2nd at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling. Pauley-Jones Funeral Home Harlan has the arrangements.

Visitations will take place from 4:00 to 8:00 PM Fri., Mar., 1st and from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM Sat., Mar., 2nd at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling.

A Rosary will be held at 7:00 PM Fri., Mar., 1st at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.

Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Earling.

Beltran hits 2-run double as Cards beat Mets 12-4

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) — Carlos Beltran hit a two-run double in a four-run third inning, Yadier Molina and John Jay added RBI doubles in the fourth and the St. Louis Cardinals routed the New York Mets 12-4 Wednesday. The starters in the top five slots in the Cardinals’ batting order combined to hit 5-for-10 with four doubles and seven RBIs, and St. Louis finished with 14 hits.

Mets scheduled starter Zack Wheeler was scratched because of a mild oblique strain sustained while swinging a bat in the cage during pregame workouts. Starter Darin Gorski allowed four runs, three hits and three walks in two-plus innings. Cardinals starter Lance Lynn gave up two runs and four hits in two innings, including John Buck’s two-run homer in the second. Michael Wacha, the Cardinals’ top selection in last June’s amateur draft, followed and allowed one hit in three innings with five strikeouts and no walks.

GOP Rep. Latham to pass on Iowa Senate bid

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa congressman who had been considered the establishment Republican choice for the seat vacated by retiring Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin says he won’t seek the job. Tom Latham said in a statement Wednesday he won’t run for Harkin’s Senate seat in 2014. The 10-term Republican from Clive says he could not “in good conscience launch a two-year statewide campaign that will detract from the commitment” to the new district he was elected to in November.

Attention now turns to U.S. Rep. Steve King of Kiron. King, a conservative from northwest Iowa, has said he’s weighing a Senate bid. He wasn’t expected to challenge Latham in a primary. Democratic Rep. Bruce Braley, a four-term House member from Waterloo, is the only announced Democrat for the seat.

Mills County arrest report

Sheriff’s officials in Mills County say two people were arrested Tuesday on separate charges. In their report issued today (Wednesday), authorities said 26-year old Chelsea Ann Rodrigues, of Glenwood, was arrested early Tuesday morning on a charge of OWI/2nd offense. The woman was taken into custody following a traffic stop at 250th and Barrus Road. She was being held in the Mills County Jail on $2,000 bond.

And, 19-year old Tyler Allen Dittus, of Henderson, was arrested at the Mills County Sheriff’s Office at around 5:30-p.m., Tuesday, on a warrant for Forgery. His bond was set at $5,000.

CR Xavier beats Lewis Central at Girls Tourney

A tough schedule once again is paying off for Cedar Rapids Xavier at tournament time.

The fifth-ranked Saints, in the state tournament for the 10th time, kept their composure during a furious late rally by Lewis Central and held on to beat the seventh-ranked Titans 50-45 in the Class 4A quarterfinals.

Sarah Dickes sank four straight free throws in the final 19.7 seconds to secure the victory and finished with 13 points to lead Xavier. Ashley Stulken added 12, while Hayley Deutmeyer and Morgan Breitbach each scored eight.

Lewis Central’s Aubrey Norville scored 14 of her 28 points in the fourth quarter to lead her team’s comeback from an 11-point deficit with just under seven minutes left.

With the 6-foot-2 Stulken forced to play cautiously because of four fouls, Lewis Central got the ball inside to Norville and she responded with five baskets on nifty turnaround moves or jump hooks.

Norville’s final bucket cut the lead to 44-41 with 1:25 left, and teammate Paige Beacom made it a three-point game again, 46-43, when she hit a short jumper in the lane with 52 seconds remaining.

Lewis Central’s Natalie Madsen then stole the ball, but the Titans gave it back on a five-second call and Dickes made her game-clinching free throws.

Norville finished 10 of 13 from the field, grabbed five rebounds and made four steals. Beacom, Madsen and Alexis Spielman each scored five points for the Titans, who finish 20-4.

Xavier advances to a semifinal game at 8:30 Thursday night with a 15-9 record. The Saints play in the Mississippi Valley Conference and eight of their losses were to Class 5A teams. The other was to Davenport Assumption, which is ranked No. 1 in Class 3A.
