Here is the latest Iowa news from The Associated Press

AMES, Iowa (AP) — A major snowstorm sweeping through Iowa did not stop Miranda Lambert’s fans from watching her perform in Ames. The country singer performed last night at the Hilton Coliseum. Officials recommend concert-goers consider staying at nearby hotels if conditions worsen.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Officials say road conditions are rapidly deteriorating in parts of Iowa as a major winter storm moves in. The state Department of Transportation says strong winds from the east reduced visibility yesterday afternoon to a quarter to half mile in southern and central Iowa. The National Weather Service says up to nine inches of snow are expected in central Iowa.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The head of Iowa’s largest homeless shelter says the center will be packed because of a snowstorm moving through the state. Tony Timm, executive director of Central Iowa Shelter in Des Moines, says 150 emergency beds already were full at the shelter on the edge of downtown by midday yesterday. He expects there will be about 40 people who will sleep in chairs at the shelter overnight.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A Senate subcommittee voted in favor of a bill to expand Medicaid. Two Democrats in the three-member Human Resources Subcommittee approved the bill yesterday. The Republican member was absent. The bill would extend Medicaid to an additional 150,000 Iowans. The federal government would pick up all costs for three years, then 10 percent of expenses would gradually shift to the state.

February 21st, 2013 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa – Feb. 21, 2013: 5 p.m. update – Iowa travel conditions are rapidly deteriorating in many areas of the state due to the advancing winter storm. Light to moderate snow continues to fall over southern and central Iowa, but an intensification of the storm is expected in the next few hours. A strong east wind is reducing visibility to one-quarter to one-half mile, especially in open areas. The Iowa Department of Transportation’s road condition report is listing most roads in southwest and south central Iowa as partially to mostly covered. For southeast Iowa, a break in the snow is expected to be short-lived as more snow is on its way. Iowa DOT road conditions in this quadrant of the state are shown as completely covered.
