Iowa State up to No. 9 in AP Poll

Iowa State is into the top ten at number nine in the latest AP Poll, The Cyclones are 6-0 for the first time since 1938 after a 28-16 win at West Virginia. Rocco Becht was 18-of-26 for 265 yards and a touchdown on a night his father was honored as a West Virginia Hall of Famer. ISU Coach Matt Campbell.

The Cyclones return to action this week by hosting Central Florida and Becht says that is their focus right now.

Four of Iowa State’s final six games are at home and the Cyclones only have only true road game remaining.

Iowa beats Washington 40-16

Iowa is 4-2 after a 40-16 win over Washington. It was another big day for Hawkeye running back Kaleb Johnson who finished with 166 yards of rushing a three touchdowns on a day Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz picked up career win 200.

Johnson combines an explosive style with the ability to break tackles.

Ferentz on reaching 200 wins.

The Hawkeyes visit Michigan State on Saturday.

(UPDATED 10/14) – Fatality accident in northern Iowa Sunday afternoon

(Worth County, Iowa) – A single-vehicle crash on Interstate 35 in northern Iowa, Sunday afternoon west of Kensett, claimed the life of the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle. The Iowa State Patrol says a 2017 Cadillac CT6 was traveling south on I-35 near the 208 Exit ramp, when the car went out of control for reasons unknown. The vehicle entered the median, passed through a cable barrier and struck a bridge pillar before coming to rest.

The accident happened at around 1:45-p.m. The driver was identified as 33-year-old Samuel Joseph Poquette, of New Ulm, MN. The Patrol says he was not wearing a seat belt.  The crash remains under investigation.

CAMERON JAMES WATKINS, 24, of Omaha (A native of Atlantic), died September 17, 2024, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, as result of being caught in a crossfire shooting in Omaha. A Public visitation with the family of CAMERON WATKINS present, will be held Saturday, Oct. 19, 2024, from 5-until 7-p.m., at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Atlantic.

Cameron Watkins was the father of two children, ages one year and three months old. He leaves behind his loving girlfriend, the mother of his children, and his father, Zach of Atlantic.

Triple fatal fiery crash in NE Iowa Sunday morning

(Delaware County, Iowa) – A head-on collision between a car and a semi tractor-trailer early this (Sunday) morning in northeastern Iowa, claimed the lives of three people, and left one person injured. The Iowa State Patrol reports a 2014 Chevy Impala was traveling east in the west bound lanes of U-S Highway 20 at around 3:36-a.m., when it collided head-on with a 2018 Freightliner semi. Upon impact, both vehicles become fully engulfed in flames. The driver of the semi was injured. Their name was not released.

The driver of the car and two passengers in the vehicle died at the scene. The names of those who died were being withheld pending an autopsy by the Delaware County Medical Examiner’s Office. The passengers were not wearing their seat belts.

The crash remains under investigation. The Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Delaware County and Dubuque County Sheriff’s Offices, Dyersville and Manchester Police Departments, Earlville Fire and Ambulance, and Dyersville Fire Department.

Red Oak man arrested on an Assault charge Saturday night

(Red Oak, Iowa) – Police in Red Oak arrested a man on an assault charge, late Saturday night. 31-year-old Thomas Andrew Schooling, of Red Oak, was arrested at around 11:17-p.m. in the 200 block of 1st Avenue, for Domestic Abuse Assault. Schooling was transported to the Montgomery County Law Enforcement Center and held without bond.

House fire reported Sunday morning in Creston

(Creston, Iowa) – The Creston Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire at 506 N. Palm St at around 1:40-a.m., Sunday (today). Authorities say the home’s owner was alerted by her smoke detector and called 911.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a small fire in the basement, likely caused by an overheated electric fan. Firefighters used several ventilation blowers to push fresh air into the house while forcing the smoke out.

The Creston Fire Department on social media, said thank-you to the Creston Police Department, whose officers were first on the scene, and assisted the homeowner.

Fire officials remind area residents to “Please test and clean your smoke alarms monthly and replace the battery at least once a year or as needed. If you have a fire or smoke in your home, get out fast. Don’t stop to take anything.”

Suspect in a Fort Dodge bank robbery is in custody

(Fort Dodge, Iowa) – Officials with the Fort Dodge Police Department say a man suspected in a bank robbery that occurred Friday afternoon, is in custody. 66-year-old Juan Alberto-Flores, of Ft. Dodge, faces felony robbery and theft charges. Authorities say that at around 3:35-p.m., Friday, the Webster County Telecommunications Center received a panic alarm from Availa Bank located on N 29th St., in Fort Dodge. Officers were dispatched to the location to check on the panic alarm. While officers were en route, they were notified that a bank robbery had just occurred.
Officers arrived on scene quickly and made contact with bank employees. Information was gathered and shared with responding officers and deputies that were in the area but the suspect was not immediately located. Officers, deputies and responding investigators with Criminal Investigations Division gathered evidence and spoke to witnesses on scene.
As a result of the work of responding law enforcement, the suspect was identified. At approximately 6:31 P.M., a Webster County Deputy located the suspects vehicle traveling on Highway 20 and conducted a traffic stop. The suspect was taken into custody without incident.
Juan Alberto Flores‐Andino is charged with Robbery in the Second Degree (a Class-C Felony) and Theft in the Second Degree (a Class-D Felony). At this time investigators with the Criminal Investigations Division are continuing to follow up on this incident. Anyone with information on this incident is encouraged to contact the Fort Dodge Police. Information may also be submitted anonymously via Crime Stoppers.
The Fort Dodge Police Department was assisted by the Webster County Sheriff’s Office and the Webster County Attorney’s Office. As with all cases, Flores‐Andino is considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
