A mobile phone should also be carried for emergency use only. Don’t talk, take photos/video or text while driving. Persons should continue to exercise caution when traveling as the pavement can go quickly from wet to icy due to the snow blowing across the roadways. East-west roadways are particularly vulnerable.

The Winter Storm that caught many motorists by surprise and left many stranded and seeking shelter, also resulted in numerous accidents and road closures along a 200-mile stretch of Interstate 80 in eastern Nebraska and Western Iowa. Accidents that took place Sunday on I-80 two-miles east of Shelby and another near Walnut, blocked traffic in both directions for hours. There were injuries reported, but none appeared to have been serious. The accident near Shelby involved several semis and cars. In Cass County, deputies worked to shuttle motorists to area hotels as quickly as possible. When the hotels became full, the Nishna Valley YMCA in Atlantic opened its doors as an emergency shelter. A person answering the phone this (Monday) morning at the Y, said 5 people sought shelter at the facility. All but one of them were still there as of 7:30-a.m., the other person left in their personal vehicle.
