Bluffs man the victim of attempted murder during a home invasion

Police in Council Bluffs are looking for two men suspected in the attempted murder Sunday, of 36-year old Thomas M. Campbell, of Council Bluffs. Sgt. Dave Dawson, with the Council Bluffs Police Department, says Campbell was shot in an apartment at 817 2nd Avenue, at around 8:17-p.m., Sunday.The man suffered a single gunshot wound to the chest. He was transported to the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, where Campbell was reported to be in critical, but stable condition.

Dawson said an investigation into the shooting determined two black men in their 30’s arrived at Campbell’s apartment and attempted a home invasion. One of the suspects wore a ski mask, a light gray sweatshirt, jeans and black gloves. A more detailed description of the second suspect is not available.

Brush up on safety procedures during Severe Weather Awareness Week

Iowans are being reminded of all the dangerous possibilities that come with spring, from flooding to tornadoes, as this is the first day of Severe Weather Awareness Week. Meteorologist Jeff Johnson, at the National Weather Service, says we should all brush up on safety procedures, though he notes, last year was relatively quiet. “Last year, of course, we had the drought, which was bad, but the other side of that coin, we had a very tranquil severe weather season with only 16 tornadoes in the state.” That was the lowest number of tornadoes in Iowa since 1963. Iowa averages 47 tornadoes per year. A record 120 tornadoes touched down in Iowa in 2004. During this Severe Weather Awareness Week, different themes will be covered each day.

“Flash flooding, the warning decisions, tornadoes on Wednesday, severe thunderstorms on Thursday and family preparedness on Friday,” Johnson says. “The week will be highlighted by the statewide tornado drill which will occur at 10 AM on Wednesday, the 27th.” That tornado drill should be taken seriously, giving everyone a chance to think of what they should do if it were the real thing and where they would take cover. The Tornado Watch will be issued at 10 o’clock on Wednesday.

“And then at about 10:15, we’ll issue a Tornado Warning for our area that will go over the Weather Radio System, through the Emergency Alert System and through the other systems,” he says. Learn more at: www.weather.gov/dmx

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The western Iowa town of Adair fired its police chief last fall because he lacked a valid firearms certificate and had been eavesdropping on the city clerk. The Des Moines Register reports public records reveal why former Chief Robert Koeneman was fired last September. Koeneman says he was treated unfairly. The sheriff handled police calls in Adair until a full-time officer was hired last November.

CORWITH, Iowa (AP) — A new gentlemen’s club in the northern Iowa town of Corwith had to operate by candlelight after losing electricity and water service. City officials say The Loft didn’t set up its utilities properly with someone responsible for payment before the club’s candlelight opening Saturday evening.

OSKALOOSA, Iowa (AP) — No one in Iowa won Powerball’s $338.3 million jackpot this weekend, but a winning ticket worth $2 million was sold in Oskaloosa. Iowa lottery officials say the $2 million winning ticket matched the first five numbers but not the Powerball. The ticket was worth $2 million because the buyer purchased a power play option to double the prize.

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — Iowa State’s Will Clyburn won’t dispute a late charge call in the Cyclones’ 78-75 loss to Ohio State in the NCAA tournament. Clyburn was called for a charge when he ran into Buckeyes point guard Aaron Craft near the basket with 1:41 to go yesterday. Replays showed Craft’s right heel was at the semicircle restricting the area where players can take a charge in Dayton, Ohio.

Beware of icy roads and bridge this (Monday) morning

The Iowa Department of Transportation’s travel site (www.511ia.org), indicates a majority of the roads and bridge in the KJAN listening area are covered with ice early this (Monday) morning. Be very cautious if you plan on traveling. Several accidents were reported to have occurred on Interstate 80 Sunday evening and night between Adair, Stuart and Dexter, as the temperatures began to drop and the roads became slick. I-29 north and near Council Bluffs, was reported to be wet, as of 3:50-a.m.

No. 9 seed Iowa beats Miami 69-53,

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Samantha Logic had 23 points with 11 rebounds and host Iowa beat eighth-seeded Miami 69-53 on Sunday night, snapping a two-game losing streak in the NCAA tournament. Melissa Dixon added 13 points in the second half for the Hawkeyes (21-12), which will face top-seeded Notre Dame Tuesday night in Iowa City. The Fighting Irish throttled Tennessee-Martin 97-64 earlier Sunday.

Iowa broke open a stalemate with an 18-3 run to jump ahead 58-44 with 7:07 left. Miami (21-11), which was up by seven early in the second half, shot just 3 of 19 from 3-point range and 30 percent overall. Morgan Stroman had 15 points and Shawnice Wilson had 15 points and 18 rebounds for the Hurricanes, who committed 24 turnovers.

Navy man Harris struggles on mound in Cards debut

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — After spending almost five years in the U.S. Navy, simply being on the mound at Roger Dean Stadium was exhilarating for St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Mitch Harris — even if the results were disappointing. Harris gave up a pair of two-run homers and took the loss as a New York Mets split squad beat the Cardinals 10-7 on Sunday. St. Louis played with a short-handed lineup. Third baseman David Freese was a late scratch after experiencing tightness in his back. Right fielder Carlos Beltran, battling a sore toe, went 1 for 5 in a minor league game.

Jon Jay was 3 for 3 with two RBIs for the Cardinals. Jamie Hoffmann and Zach Lutz each hit a two-run homer off Harris, selected by the Cardinals out of the Naval Academy in the 13th round of the 2008 draft. He had been unable to play for the organization because of his military service obligation.

Iowa State and Georgia set to meet in 2nd round

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) – Through all of his success in 18 seasons at Iowa State, a loss in 1999 still sticks with Bill Fennelly. That same game also sticks out to Georgia’s Andy Landers for completely different reasons – it was the last time the Lady Bulldogs reached the Final Four.

The two long-tenured coaches will reacquaint themselves on Monday night when the fifth-seeded Cyclones (24-8) face the No. 4 seed Lady Bulldogs (26-6) in the second round of the NCAA women’s tournament. The winner will advance to the regional semifinals across town at the Spokane Arena next Saturday night.

Iowa State knocked off Gonzaga, while Georgia pulled away from Montana for first-round victories on Saturday. The matchup between the Cyclones and Lady Bulldogs will be just the third meeting all-time between the two schools, all coming in the NCAA tournament.

Former Adair police chief fired for misconduct

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – The town of Adair fired its police chief last fall because he lacked a valid firearms certificate and had been eavesdropping on the city clerk.  The Des Moines Register reports public records reveal why former Chief Robert Koeneman was fired last September.

Koeneman was denied unemployment benefits after city officials testified that he had let his certifications lapse. Plus, he directed the city’s part-time officer, Lt. Josephine Weston, to carry a cell phone into the clerk’s office and set it down so he could listen to what was said. Koeneman says he was treated unfairly. Weston was also fired after using the city bidding process to buy a police cruiser for her own use without paying sales tax.

The sheriff handled police calls in Adair until a full-time officer was hired in November.
