Chiefs activate backup QB Chad Henne for Vikings game

Sports

November 2nd, 2019 by Ric Hanson

UNDATED (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have activated backup quarterback Chad Henne (HEN’-ee) from injured reserve, giving them another option against the Minnesota Vikings if Patrick Mahomes is unable to play Sunday.

Mahomes dislocated his kneecap two weeks ago in Denver and is listed as questionable. He missed last week’s loss to Green Bay when veteran Matt Moore started in his place. If Mahomes misses another game, Moore would likely start with Henne the backup.

In other roster moves Saturday, the Chiefs waived rookie quarterback Kyle Shurmur, placed offensive tackle Greg Senat on injured reserve and promoted defensive tackle Joey Ivie to the 53-man roster.

Big Night for Lane Spieker Leads CAM to Playoff Win

Sports

November 2nd, 2019 by Jim Field

The CAM Cougars made a long road trip to face the Lamoni Demons worth it Friday night with a 62-24 victory at Graceland University.

Lane Spieker had a big night for the Cougars rushing 21 times for 211 yards and five touchdowns.  He also added a 60 yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

The Cougars got on the board early, as Spieker intercepted a Patrick Savage pass on the Demons opening drive to set up his first rushing TD from a yard out.  CAM scored again on their next possession on a 56 yard Spieker run and added both two point conversions to go up 16-0 early.

Lamoni answered on a Savage 2 yard touchdown run and two point conversion to narrow the gap to 16-8.  But they would watch the as Cougars scored the next 38 points.

Spieker added a pair of TD runs in the second quarter to give CAM a 30-8 halftime lead.  Ethan Arp scored on a 40 yard run and QB Nate Hensley tacked on a 7 yard TD run to increase the lead to 46-8 after three quarters.

The two teams each scored twice on the fourth quarter, with Spieker getting both of the Cougar touchdowns, a 16 yard run and the kickoff return.

The Cougars forced four Demon turnovers, with interceptions by Spieker and Jacob Holste and fumble recoveries by Holste and Joe Kauffman.

Kauffman led the CAM defense with nine tackles, including 7 solo tackles and one tackle for loss.

The Cougars improve to 8-2 with the win and advance to the quarterfinal round next Friday, November 8 in a 7:00 pm rematch with Audubon at Chis Jones Field.  Audubon won the earlier matchup on the final night of the regular season 19-16.  We’ll have live coverage on KJAN with Chris Parks and Mike Smith.

Midwest Sports Headlines: 11/2/2019

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is questionable against the Minnesota Vikings, raising the possibility the league MVP could return after missing just one game to a dislocated kneecap. Mahomes practiced on a limited basis throughout the week, just as he did last week. But rather than being listed out, as he was for the Green Bay Packers, he was given the official injury designation that means it is uncertain whether Mahomes will play.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Fred Hoiberg knows the track record of Nebraska basketball coaches is not good. He wanted the job anyway. Hoiberg takes over a program that has not won a conference championship in 70 years or ever won a game in the NCAA Tournament. He says a sold-out arena and top-notch facilities can trump the program’s lack of tradition. He says his sales pitch to recruits is that they can come to Lincoln and do things that have never been done before at Nebraska.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — No. 22 Kansas State and rival Kansas are both coming off wins heading into their annual Sunflower State Showdown. The Wildcats are still flying high off their upset of then-No. 5 Oklahoma last week. The Jayhawks are coming off a game-ending field goal that beat Texas Tech. The Wildcats and Jayhawks meet Saturday in Lawrence.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — David Perron scored eight seconds into overtime to give the St. Louis Blues a 4-3 comeback victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets. After the Blues overcame a two-goal deficit to force overtime, Perron scored off a pass from Alex Pietrangelo at the moment St. Louis’ power play from Sonny Milano’s hooking penalty expired.

The Audubon Wheelers advanced to the Quarterfinal round of the 8-Man Football Playoffs with a 48-20 win over the Harris-Lake Park Wolves on Friday night at Chis Jones Field. The Wheelers turned the game at the end of the first quarter into the start of the second.

With the Wheelers up 14-6, the Wolves had touchdown pass called back near the end of the first quarter on a holding call. That would force the Wolves to punt the ball back to the Wheelers. Audubon then ran a double reverse flea-flicker on the first play of the second quarter to grab a 2-score lead.

Kaiden Smith had a monster night for Audubon. He finished with 3 rushing touchdowns, 1 receiving touchdown, and 1 passing touchdown. He finished with 105 yards rushing, 75 yards receiving, and the one touchdown pass for 21 yards.

Skyler Schultes was also a force for the Wheelers with 136 yards passing and 1 touchdown to go along with 58 yards rushing.

The Wheelers improve to 10-1 on the season and will get a rematch with the CAM Cougars next Friday in the Quarterfinals. The Wheelers won that regular season finale over CAM 19-16.

Harris-Lake Park ends their season with an 8-2 record.

We’ll have coverage of the Audubon vs. CAM game next week on KJAN. Pregame will start at 6:00pm, with kickoff at 7:00pm next Friday night at Chis Jones Field.
