DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – What should Iowa do with the extra money sitting in the state’s bank accounts? It’s a key point of debate in ongoing budget negotiations as GOP Governor Terry Branstad, House Republicans and Senate Democrats push different ideas for dealing with a surplus estimated at more than $800 million. If lawmakers can’t reach a deal, as has happened in the past, the money could just stay put for some time.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Des Moines police have identified the man found dead with a gunshot wound in an apartment in the city’s River Bend area. Police said yesterday that officers were called to a shooting in an apartment at 1:24 a.m. Sunday. The victim has been identified as 19-year-old Anthony Moss of Chicago, Illinois.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – A second shooting on the same day in Des Moines has left a man critically wounded. Police are investigating the shooting that happened around 11:45 a.m. yesterday. After gunfire was reported, officers found a 20-year-old man behind an apartment building near Interstate 235 in central Des Moines on Sunday. The shooting victim’s name wasn’t immediately released.

IDA GROVE, Iowa (AP) – The collapse of a downtown building left quite a mess in the northwest Iowa town of Ida Grove. Assistant Fire Chief Scott Van Dusen says the vacant building on 2nd Street started to collapse Saturday when a side wall caved in around 8:30 p.m.

Members of the CAM and Griswold Community School District’s Boards of Education will hold separate meetings Monday evening.

In Griswold, the Board meets at 5:30-p.m. in the Central Office Board room, to discuss: High School Computer laptops, and Teen Leadership, following presentations on those matters; The 2013 School Board election; and, discussion with regard to the Showcase Night.

The Board is also expected to act on: The Sports Boosters’ Constitution and By-Laws; a resolution pertaining to the School Calendar, and the Fisher Track. They will also receive an update on district negotiations, and various Board Policies.

In Anita, the CAM School Board will gather at 7-p.m. Monday, in the CAM High School Media Center. Discussion and possible action items on their agenda include matters pertaining to: The Football Scoreboard; School Board election; the Anita Development Corporation; Contracts; the 2013-2014 School Calendar; and, approval of 2013 graduates. Prior to adjournment, the CAM School Board will enter into a closed session to discuss negotiations for the 2013-2014 school year.

The Atlantic Parks and Recreation Department’s Board of Directors will hold a regularly scheduled meeting Monday evening, in the Council’s chambers at City Hall, beginning at 5:15. During the meeting, Parks and Rec Director Roger Herring will provide the Board with updates on: The Schildberg Recreation Area Campground; The Sunnyside Park Tennis Court reconstruction project, including a review of the project timeline; an update on the Boat ramp project and information regarding Park Department personnel.

Herring will also present a review of the Building Committee meeting held April 4^th, and seek the Board’s approval of a change order on the Maintenance Building, as recommended by the Committee.

Police in Red Oak arrested a local woman, Sunday afternoon. 34-year old Amy Dawn Clemmons, of Red Oak, was charged with shoplifting. She was taken into custody at around 2:15-p.m. and brought to the Montgomery County Jail, where Clemmons was being held on $300 bond.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – A bill approved by the Legislature and headed to Governor Terry Branstad would give school districts more authority in dealing with parents who enroll their children in the state’s voluntary preschool program but then fail to bring the youths to class. Supporters say the measure is needed because many districts have waiting lists for preschool. If parents enroll their children but don’t bring them to school, they’re still taking spots that could go to others.

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (AP) – Police in central Iowa city of Marshalltown say a 14-year-old boy found collapsed on a bike trail has died. Police say officers went to the trail Friday night after getting a report about an unresponsive person lying on the trail. An autopsy has been ordered.

GLENWOOD, Iowa (AP) – A 36-year-old Glenwood man convicted in February of first-degree murder for the death of his 5-month-old son has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Jason Curtis was sentenced Friday for the death of Jackson Curtis on July 14th, 2011.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) – Union workers in North Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa who have been locked out of their jobs for 20 months at American Crystal Sugar Company have voted to ratify the company’s proposed contract. Fifty-five percent voted this weekend to accept the contract offer. It was the workers’ fifth time voting on the contract. American Crystal is the country’s largest sugar beet processor.
