Big weather changes coming Wednesday…

Weather

April 30th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

A cold front will move into the state from the northwest this afternoon and evening. Very warm air will push temperatures into the 80s over the southeast half of the state, with 70s over much of the rest of the state. The far northwest will only reach the 60s. Thunderstorms are expected to develop along the cold front late this afternoon and tonight. The front will stall across southeast Iowa on Wednesday with rain continuing through the next few days. Cold air spilling into the central U.S. will change the rain to snow over much of northwest and central Iowa Thursday and Thursday night. (NWS/Des Moines)

Nominations sought for Iowa’s Best Breaded Pork Tenderloin

News

April 30th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

Nominations will be accepted beginning tomorrow (Wednesday) for the 11th annual Iowa’s Best Breaded Pork Tenderloin contest. Ron Birkenholz is with the Iowa Pork Producers Association, which sponsors the contest.

Breitbachs Country Dining in Balltown, was last year’s Iowa “Best Bread Pork Tenderloin” winner.

“Any restaurant, cafe, tavern…you know, anyone who serves a breaded pork tenderloin is eligible to be nominated,” Birkenholz says. “We encourage tenderloin lovers to get their nominations in on May 1st.” In addition to statewide publicity, the winner of the contest receives a plaque and $500.

“All the past winners have always told us they see a major influx of business,” Birkenholz says. “We’ve got people from all over the Midwest who follow this contest. We’ve had people from Illinois, Minnesota, and Missouri go to these restaurants that win to try (their pork tenderloin).” Iowans who want to submit a nomination can do so online at www.IowaPork.org. Entries are due by June 11.

Last year, Iowans submitted a record 993 nominations naming 65 restaurants. Judges visited the restaurants and ultimately chose Breitbach’s  Country Dining in Balltown as the 2013 winner of “Iowa’s Best Breaded Pork Tenderloin.” The winner of this year’s contest will be named in October, which is “Pork Month.” The winner of “Iowa’s Best Burger Contest” will revealed this Thursday. That competition is sponsored by the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association and the Iowa Beef Industry Council.

Chiefs finishing off overhaul of moribund team

Sports

April 30th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs weren’t exactly in shambles when John Dorsey and Andy Reid first walked through the door. After all, the team did have six Pro Bowl players on the roster. That doesn’t mean the Chiefs weren’t in need of an extreme makeover. Over the past couple months, that’s exactly what Dorsey and Reid have done. They made bold moves in free agency, trading for quarterback Alex Smith and signing such players as Anthony Fasano and Donnie Avery. They also locked up some of their own players, signing wide receiver Dwayne Bowe to a long-term deal.

They plugged most of the rest of their holes in last weekend’s draft, and now eagerly await the start of organized team activities to see exactly where they’re at in their rebuilding.
