Melanie Petty, spokesperson for the Trevor Frederickson Memorial Fund report, everyone had a great time last week at the Southwestern Community College annual dinner. Petty says they were able to meet the Fund’s three scholarship recipients and new coaches for the Spartans baseball program. Petty says back in 2008, Trevor received a baseball scholarship and it made all the difference in him continuing to play his second year.

She says they are thankful to the SWCC community for being such a huge part of Trev’s life and happy that they are able to pay it forward. Thanks for a great night to: Jordan Camp, Mitchell McIntyre, Luiz Torres, Robert Ortiz and Brian Soto.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs stayed on top of the AFC West with a 24-17 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers at Azteca Stadium. Daniel Sorensen picked off Philip Rivers’ fourth interception near the goal line with 18 seconds to play to secure the Chiefs’ 10th win in 11 meetings with the Chargers. Patrick Mahomes passed for 182 yards and hit Travis Kelce for his only touchdown. Rivers passed for 353 yards during his first four-interception game since November 2016 for the Chargers.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Philip Rivers went down slinging in Mexico in his first four-interception game in three years for the Chargers. Los Angeles’ playoff hopes are looking grim after the team’s longtime franchise quarterback and his offense came up empty at Azteca Stadium on plenty of opportunities to turn around this game and their season. Rivers surpassed 3,000 yards passing for the 14th consecutive season, but couldn’t make enough plays near the goal line to save the Bolts.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Left tackle Russell Okung is out for a second straight week when the Los Angeles Chargers face the Kansas City Chiefs at Azteca Stadium. Okung has a groin injury that kept him out against Oakland 11 days ago. Running back Darwin Thompson and cornerback Kendall Fuller were inactive for the Chiefs.

UNDATED (AP) — Duke has moved to No. 1 in The Associated Press men’s college basketball poll following Kentucky’s surprising loss to Evansville. The Blue Devils moved up a spot after a pair of wins last week. The Wildcats dropped to No. 9. Louisville is second, followed by Michigan State, Kansas and North Carolina.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Javan White had 24 points and 15 rebounds and UMBC rolled past NAIA member Bacone 111-38. The 73-point margin of victory is a school record.

IRVING, Texas – The Big Conference announced today that Iowa State junior placekicker Connor Assalley is the Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week.

Assalley played a huge role in Iowa State’s 23-21 victory over No. 22 Texas on Saturday. Assalley was 2-of-2 on field goals and 2-of-2 on PATs in the victory, including connecting on one of the most historic kicks in the Cyclone annals.

With Iowa State down 21-20, Assalley booted a 36-yard field goal as time expired to clinch the Cyclone victory. It was the first regulation walk-off score for Iowa State since 1983.

Assalley also had a successful 35-yarder in the second quarter.

The Naperville, Ill., native ranks fourth in school history in field goal percentage (71.1 pct.) and his 27 career field goals is ninth in school history.

NEW YORK – The Friends of John Mackey have announced today eight semi-finalists for the 2019 John Mackey Award and Iowa State sophomore tight end Charlie Kolar made the list.

The eight semi-finalists were determined by confidential balloting of the John Mackey Award Selection Committee. The award is given annually to the most outstanding collegiate tight end and the recipient will be announced on Dec. 11.

Kolar is having the greatest season by a tight end in Iowa State history in 2019, leading the Big 12 in receptions (41), receiving yards (549) and receiving touchdowns (7). Kolar’s season receiving yard total is a school record by a tight end and his seven touchdowns is one shy from the school mark set by E.J. Bibbs (8) in 2014.

Among tight ends nationally, Kolar ranks fourth in touchdown catches (7), seventh in receiving yards per game (54.9) and eighth in receptions per game (4.1).

A native of Norman, Okla., Kolar has played at an All-American rate all season. His Pro Football Focus (PFF) receiving grade of 90.6% is No. 1 nationally (200 snaps) and his overall offensive grade is at 86.0%, the second-best total nationally among tight ends (200 snaps).

Kolar has been Davey O’Brien Award semi-finalist Brock Purdy’s favorite target. The 6-6, 252-pounder has routinely come up with big plays with his outstanding hands and precise routes. A total of 32 of his 41 receptions have resulted in first downs or touchdowns and he’s been on the receiving end of 13 3^rd/4^th down conversions, including three of ISU’s four 4^th down conversion receptions.

Kolar, who has four 70-yard receiving games this season, has an active streak of a touchdown catch in four-straight games to tie for the third-longest string in school history.

Kolar was honored as an Academic All-District 6 selection by CoSIDA and is in the running for Academic All-America accolades. He maintains a 3.98 cumulative GPA in mechanical engineering.

The IKM-Manning Wolves landed a strong number of players on the Class A District 2 All-District Awards list.

1st Team Offensive selections for the Wolves were: Running Backs Amos Rasmussen and Kyler Rasmussen, Offensive Lineman Will Jorgensen, and Wide Receiver Parker Behrens.

1st Team Defensive honorees for the Wolves are: Defensive Lineman Brody Swearingen and Linbacker Colten Brandt.

Amos Rasmussen was also named the First Team Specialist. Colten Brandt was named the Defensive Player of the Year. Head Coach Tom Casey was named Head Coach of the Year. Cory McCarville was honored as an Assistant Coach of the Year as well.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – – University of Iowa defensive end A.J. Epenesa has been recognized as Big Ten Conference Defensive Player of the Week following Iowa’s 23-19 win over seventh-ranked Minnesota. The announcement was made Monday by the Big Ten office.

Epenesa (6-foot-6, 280-pounds) is a native of Glen Carbon, Illinois (Edwardsville High School). He earns the third conference honor of his career after sharing the defensive honor a year ago for his play in wins over Iowa State and Illinois.

Epenesa recorded three solo tackles and one assist as Iowa handed Minnesota its first loss of the season. He recorded 2.5 of Iowa’s six sacks, along with forcing a fumble and collecting one quarterback pressure. His final tackle of the game came on Minnesota’s final possession and resulted in the Golden Gophers facing a third-and-21 in the final two minutes. Riley Moss intercepted a Minnesota pass two players later to secure the Iowa victory.

Epenesa has 26 tackles in 10 games (16 solo, 10 assists). He leads the Hawkeyes with seven sacks and nine quarterback pressures, while ranking second in tackles for loss. He shares the team lead with two forced fumbles.

The Atlantic girls basketball team will get a jump start on the season tonight when they host Lenox for an Iowa Hall of Pride scrimmage. The program allows teams to play a full game setting scrimmage that doesn’t count on the team’s record and the teams involved do a community service project.

Atlantic will be participating in the “Family Dreams Christmas” program with the Atlantic Police Department for the second straight year as their community service project. That project involves volunteers and Officers taking people in need shopping.

The game between Atlantic and Lenox tonight will start at 6:45pm at the Atlantic High School. The Trojans will officially open up the regular season on Friday with a trip to Bondurant-Farrar.
