Chiefs announce moves within scouting department

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs shook up their scouting department Thursday by hiring Will Lewis as director of pro scouting and Marvin Allen as the director of college scouting. Lewis spent 13 years with the Seahawks, most recently as vice president of football operations. Allen spent the past four years as a national scout with the Falcons.

The Chiefs also hired Randy Ball to be their pro scouting assistant and Trey Koziol to serve as an area scout, and promoted Mike Borgonzi to assistant director of pro scouting, Dom Green to assistant director of college scouting, Brett Veach to pro and college personnel analyst and Ryan Poles to college coordinator.

Mets snap 6-game skid, beat Wainwright, Cardinals

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Daniel Murphy and David Wright combined for five hits and three RBIs against Adam Wainwright and the New York Mets snapped a six-game losing streak with a 5-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday. Jonathan Niese (3-4) allowed two runs on six hits in 7 1-3 innings, his longest outing of the season. He ended his four-game losing streak over five starts since a win at Minnesota on April 12.

The Mets avoided a four-game sweep by getting to the Cardinals ace, who was coming off a two-hit shutout in which he no-hit the Rockies for 7 1-3 innings. Murphy doubled twice and singled with an RBI and walk and was 9 for 15 in the series. Wright singled and doubled with two RBIs.

Drake signs Marshalltown’s Caird

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Marshalltown Community College guard Chris Caird has signed a letter of intent with Drake. Drake says Thursday that Caird, a 6-foot-6, 215-pound shooting guard from Daventry, England, will have two seasons of eligibility remaining. Caird should give the Bulldogs a major boost on the perimeter for first-year coach Ray Giacoletti.

Caird averaged 18 points and six rebounds a game for Marshalltown a year ago, connecting on 41 percent of his 3s. Caird spent three years at Marshalltown, missing the 2011-12 season because of injury.

More details on Thursday accident in Atlantic

The Atlantic Police Department Thursday afternoon released additional details about an accident which occurred at around 9-a.m., Thursday. Officials say Beth McDermott and Belinda Morris, both of Atlantic, were transported to the Cass County Memorial Hospital following the crash on east 7th Street, between the Walmart and Super 8 Hotel. Both women’s injuries were not considered to be life threatening.

Authorities say Morris’ vehicle was traveling east on Highway 6 (7th Street), and had proceeded to turn left into the Super 8 driveway, when she was hit by the westbound McDermott vehicle. Morris was issued a citation for failure to yield when making a left turn. Damage from the crash amounted to $20,000.

CURTIS L. (SCOUP) ESHELMAN, 85, of Mesa, AZ (and formerly of the Noble Township area and Council Bluffs), died Wed., May 15th, at his home in Mesa. Funeral services for CURTIS ESHELMAN will be held 11-a.m. Wed., May 22nd, at the Griswold United Methodist Church. Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold has the arrangements.

An open visitation will be held at the funeral home on Tue., May 21st, with the family present from 5-to-7pm.

Interment will be at the Noble Center Cemetery.

CURTIS ESHELMAN is survived by:

His wife Barbara of Mesa, AZ

His daughters: Cheryl Tousley and husband Rick of Lewiston, ID; Marilyn Lang and husband John of Seattle, WA, and Jodie Boelens and husband Herb of Grand Rapids, MI

His brothers Gale “Dutch” Eshelman of Elliott, IA, and Roger Eshelman and wife Marjorie of Ogden, IA

His sister JoAnn Anderson and husband Dean of Elliott, IA.

7 grandchildren. 5 great grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

(Update) – Improper installation caused lights to fall on AMS students

Three students attending the Atlantic Middle School were injured Wednesday, when a light fixture in a recently renovated classroom fell. Superintendent Dr. Michael Amstine said he received word about the incident happening in the third floor classroom, at around 9-a.m. Wednesday, from AMS Principal Cam Smith. He said two students suffered from scratches, while another had a bump on the head. The trio were treated by the school nurse. One student was subsequently transported to the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, for additional examination and treatment. The classroom and two others with similar light fixtures were evacuated while the general contractor and architect were contacted.

Amstine said an initial examination revealed the fixtures weren’t properly installed to specifications. He says the contractor made sure the problems were corrected Wednesday afternoon. Amstine says the contractor’s insurance is expected to handle any medical or property damages. The fixture that fell, was in four sections, and fell in a type of “Domino effect,” according to Amstine. He said it’s not the type of thing one expects to happen after an expensive renovation project has taken place.

The incident was a first for Amstine, as far as school renovation and construction projects are concerned. The Superintendent says he’s just glad no one was seriously injured, because the potential was there for it to “Have ended that way.”

Iowa to play back-loaded slate in 2014

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa will play five games in November but just twice in October in 2014. The Big Ten released its revamped football schedule on Thursday, which in 2014 will include new members Maryland and Rutgers.  The Hawkeyes play just one home game in the first five weekends of Big Ten play – but they’ll get two bye weeks.  Iowa will play Purdue, Maryland, Minnesota and Illinois on the road and host Indiana, Northwestern, Wisconsin and Nebraska.

The conference will split into East and West divisions after this season, with the Hawkeyes in the West division.  Iowa is scheduled to open with home games against Northern Iowa, Ball State, Iowa State before a road trip to Pitt. The Hawkeyes begin this season on Aug. 31 against Northern Illinois.
