Slight risk for severe weather this afternoon and Sunday

Weather

June 8th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

An upper level system will drop southeastward through the region later today into Sunday. This will allow for showers and thunderstorms to develop and spread across the state mainly this afternoon into tonight.971443_479053698839497_1763310660_n Shower and thunderstorm chances will continued across the state Sunday, before tapering off from west to east Sunday night. There is a slight risk of sever weather across west central and southwestern portions of the state this afternoon into tonight. Large hail, damaging winds, and possibly an isolated tornado are the main severe threats. Locally heavy rainfall with the potential for flash flooding is also possible tonight. Highs in the 70s are expected today, with highs in the mid 60s to lower 70s for Sunday.

Nationwide regulars looking forward to Iowa

Sports

June 8th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — This weekend’s NASCAR Nationwide race in Iowa promises to be a rare treat for series regulars. The 0.875-mile oval has always been a favorite among the drivers and today’s (Saturday’s) race is as good a chance as any for a series regular to score a victory.

Joey Logano is the lone Sprint Cup driver scheduled to race at Iowa. Though Logano is coming off a win at Dover last weekend, it appears likely that a Nationwide driver could win for just the third time in 12 starts this season.
