Lolo Jones’ attempt at humor backfires

Sports

June 18th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Lolo Jones’ attempt at humor in a video that’s gone viral received a chilly reception from some members of the bobsledding community. Like that, the U.S. hurdler finds herself under scrutiny again. Jones posted a Vine video in which she pokes fun at a check she received for $741.84 in prize money from the U.S. Bobsled and Skeleton Federation. In the spoof, she picks up the phone and says, “I’m going to be a little bit late on my rent.”

And now, instead of concentrating on the U.S. championships this week in her hometown, she’s explaining herself. She insisted it was simply a joke and has already talked to some of her bobsledding teammates. She says, “none of the girl teammates I work with took offense.”

Biologist says Iowa’s pheasant numbers likely down

Ag/Outdoor

June 18th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A Department of Natural Resources biologist says Iowa’s pheasant population likely will decline this year because of the cool and wet spring. DNR upland wildlife biologist Todd Bogenschutz says Iowa’s pheasant population usually increases after mild winters and dry, warm springs. This year, a snowy winter was followed by record-setting cold temperatures and rain. Because of those conditions, Bogenschutz says the pheasant population will likely be smaller than in 2012.

Habitat also has been an issue for the pheasant population, as high commodity prices lead more farmers to grow crops rather than set aside land for wildlife under the federal Conservation Reserve Program. But Bogenschutz says Iowa has made progress in creating more habitat for pheasants through an effort to set aside 50,000 acres of land to aid the birds.

Exira man pleads guilty to charges connected to stabbing incident

News

June 18th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

An Exira man arrested in April in connection with a knifing incident outside of a business in the community, plead guilty Monday to charges associated with the crime. 21-year old Jesse Lee Brubaker was facing two Class C felony charges of Willful Injury, associated with an assault that resulted in two persons being cut with a knife. Online court records indicate Brubaker instead reached a plea agreement that reduced the Willful Injury charges to a Class D felony, and included a charge of OWI/1st Offense.

Brubaker was sentenced to a total of 10-years in prison, the term for which will be served at the Iowa Medical & Classification Center, in Oakdale. He’s also required to pay a fine of $750 plus related court costs. Brubaker was given credit for time already served associated with the OWI charge for an offense that took place in January.

Had he been found guilty of two Class C felony charges of Willful Injury, Brubaker could have been sentenced to 10-years in prison on each count, and would have been subject to fines of up to $10,000 for each count. The two Class D-felonies are punishable by a maximum of 5-years in prison on each count, and fines of up to $7,500 for each offense.
