Two people were killed while another suffered minor injuries during a head on collision Friday afternoon, in Audubon County. The Iowa State Patrol says 82 year old Harold Akers and his passenger, 79 year old Doris Akers, both of Exira, died in the crash that happened at around 1:25-pm on Highway 44, about 4 miles east of Kimballton.
Officials say 42 year old James Gibson, of Panora, was driving a 2012 Ford F-150 pickup that crossed the centerline of the road and hit Akers’ 2011 Chrysler head on. Gibson was transported by Elk Horn Fire and Rescue to the Audubon County Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.
The accident remains under investigation. Deputies from Audubon, Cass and Shelby Counties along with the Audubon County Medical Examiner and Audubon County Attorney, assisted at the scene.
HAROLD AKERS, 82 AND DORIS AKERS, 79 of Exira died Friday, Sept. 27th. Joint funeral services for HAROLD AND DORIS AKERS will be held 10:30-a.m. Thu., Oct. 3rd, at the Exira Christian Church. Kessler Funeral Home in Exira has the arrangements.
Friends may call at the funeral home, where a family visitation is from 5-to 7pm Wednesday.
Burial will be in the Exira Cemetery.
HAROLD AND DORIS AKERS are survived by:
Their children – Kristi (Jerry) McClain, of Exira; Michael (Lori) Akers, and Todd (Angel) Akers, all of Colorado Springs, CO.
8 grandchildren & 5 great-grandchildren.
HAROLD AKERS is also survived his brother & sister: Nyle Akers, of Exira, and Lana (Rich) Boggs, of Guthrie Center.
DORIS AKERS is also survived by her brothers & sisters: Lois Oakley, of Audubon; Frank Hutchins, of Norwalk; Bill (Marlene) Hutchins, of Apache Junction, AZ; and Gary (Rhonda) Hutchins, of Roswell, NM.
The couple is also survived by their sisters-in-law, other relatives, and friends.
MAXINE BRUNER, 91, of Atlantic died Saturday, Sept. 28th at Atlantic Nursing and Rehab. A gathering of family and friends for MAXINE BRUNER, will be held from 10-a.m until Noon on Tue., Oct. 1st, with a lunch to follow, at the Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home in Atlantic.
Burial will be in the Atlantic Cemetery, at a later date.

Her son – Burdette (Bonnie) Bruner, of Atlantic.
Her sister – Shirley (Lloyd) Jorgensen, of Audubon.
4 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – The population of hogs and pigs in Iowa has reached the highest number ever.
The United States Department of Agriculture says in its quarterly report released Friday that the Sept. 1 inventory of hogs and pigs in the state shows 21.2 million animals. That’s up from 2 percent reported on the same date a year ago and is the highest inventory on record.
Iowa is by far the nation’s leading hog producer with nearly a third of the nation’s 68.4 million animals. A distant second is North Carolina with about 9.5 million hogs. Minnesota is third with 7.6 million. Followed by Illinois with 4.7 million and Nebraska with 3.1 million.
Governor Terry Branstad and Lieutenant Governor Kim Reynolds will tour Agri Drain Corporation in Guthrie County as part of Manufacturing Week on Monday, September 30, 2013. Manufacturing Week is an effort to draw greater attention to some of Iowa’s outstanding employers and the excellent opportunities a career in manufacturing can provide.
The Branstad Administration will learn about the company history, tour the facility, and hear from company officials on the benefits and challenges of doing business in Iowa. DES MOINES – The Iowa Outdoor Expo for kids and families is scheduled for Sept. 28 – 29, at the west end of Waterworks Park, near the Izaak Walton League Lodge, 4343 George Flagg Parkway, in Des Moines.
The Expo is a way to introduce children and families to new and exciting ways to enjoy the outdoors with more than 50 free hands-on activities. Attendees may shoot, fish, canoe and see and touch wildlife while learning about outdoor recreation.
In addition, author, illustrator and musician Doug Wood will be performing EarthSongs, EarthStories.

On the night of Saturday, Sept. 21st the Stuart Police Department was dispatched to Ruby’s Pub in the 200 block of NE 2nd St. on reports of a man with a gun threatening individuals.
The suspect, Thomas Charles Oder, was later spotted leaving the area in a maroon Ford F-150. Oder refused to stop for Officers and fled south on Stuart Rd at a high rate of speed. The vehicle eventually came to a stop at the intersection of 210th Street and Stuart Rd.
Thomas Charles Oder was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault, OWI, Felony Eluding, and Carrying Weapons.
