NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — The IndyCar Series reiterated its support for the Iowa Speedway following comments from driver Graham Rahal that insinuated the series won’t return in 2014. Rahal said Saturday after a qualifying run that he hoped Sunday’s race drew a strong crowd, adding that “there’s a lot of rumors we won’t be coming back here and I hope that’s not true. I mean, it’s a fun place to go race.”

The IndyCar series has a year-to-year contract with Iowa Speedway, which has hosted the series since 2007. IndyCar spokeswoman Amy Konrath responded to Rahal’s comments by telling The Associated Press that the series and the speedway are in discussions about future scheduling. Konrath says Iowa is a unique venue that highlights the excitement and versatility of the series.

A.J. Pierzynski also hit a two-run homer for Texas, which goes for a three-game sweep on Sunday night with Nick Tepesch (3-6, 4.84) facing Adam Wainwright (10-4, 2.37). The first two games have been sellouts and the finale was supposed to be a matchup of aces, but the Rangers are saving Yu Darvish for the Yankees Tuesday in New York.

Iowa man selling coffin gets questions about bones

News

June 22nd, 2013 by Ric Hanson

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — An online classified ad offering an oak coffin neglected to mention the full skeleton inside that Iowa authorities seized to try and identify. The Council Bluffs Daily Nonpareil reports the coffin belonged to the now defunct Council Bluffs chapter of the International Order of Odd Fellows.

Dave Burgstrum says he placed the ad to sell the coffin for $12,000 because he’s trying to raise money to pay the property taxes on the fraternal organizations hall. Burgstrum says the coffin that was made in the 1900s was used in the group’s rituals to represent death, and the bones had been inside for years.

Council Bluffs Police detective Michael Roberts says human remains can’t be sold with proper identification. So the skeleton was sent to the Iowa State Medical Examiner.
