Man’s body recovered from western Iowa river

OTO, Iowa (AP) – Authorities say a 23-year-old Ida County man has drowned in an accident on the Little Sioux River near Oto in western Iowa. Woodbury County Sheriff’s Sgt. Jim Bauerly says the man was with three friends when he fell into the swift-flowing river about 10:30 a.m. Sunday.   One of the friends jumped in to help but was unable to get him out of the river.
The man’s body was recovered a little before 2 p.m., about 30 yards from where he’d fallen in. His name hasn’t been released yet.

LAURA K. PARDEE, 102, of Audubon, died Sun., July 14th, at the Audubon County Memorial Hospital. A Mass of Christian Burial service for LAURA PARDEE will be held 10:30-a.m. Thu., July 18th, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Audubon. Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon has the arrangements.

Friends may call at the funeral home, where the family visitation begins 6-p.m. Wednesday (7/17), and a Scripture service takes place at 7-p.m.

Burial will be in the St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery in Audubon.

LAURA PARDEE is survived by:

Her daughters – Mary Lee Jensen, of Exira, and Cheryl (Peter) Huyck, of Iowa City.

6 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren,  1 great-great grandchild, other relatives & friends.

VERNON D. SCHNACK, 73, of Walnut (& formerly of Harlan), died Sun., July 14th, at his home. Funeral service for VERNON SCHNACK will be held at 10:00-a.m. Wed., July 17th in the Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan.

Friends may call from 2:00-9:00-p.m. Tues., July 16th at the funeral home where family will greet friends from 6:00 to 8:00-p.m.

Burial will be in the Harlan Cemetery.

VERNON SCHNACK is survived by:

Sons, Jeff Schnack of Ponca City, OK; Jason Schnack (fiancee Kim Canada) of Walnut; and Jonas Schnack of Waverly

Tabor residents arrested; stolen vehicles recovered

A couple from Tabor, in Fremont County, were arrested Sunday on a theft-and drug-related charges. The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office reports 27-year old’s Jeremy and Charlene Chaney were taken into custody following the execution of a search warrant on their property located at 505 Vine Street, in Tabor.

During the search, two stolen vehicles were recovered. The Chaney’s each face charges that include Possession of Stolen Property, Possession of an Offensive Weapons, Possession of Methamphetamine, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. The couple was being held in the Fremont County Jail on $21,300 bond.

EVANSDALE, Iowa (AP) — Hundreds of people gathered in Evansdale to mark the one-year anniversary of the disappearance of cousins Lyric Cook and Elizabeth Collins. People from throughout the country gathered Saturday at Lofty’s Lounge, and many took part in a 125-mile motorcycle and auto trek through northeast Iowa. They were marking the year since 10-year-old Lyric and 8-year-old Elizabeth disappeared while riding their bicycles on July 13th, 2012. Their bodies were found in December in a wooded area of Bremer County.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Governor Terry Branstad is set to return today from a European trade trip. Branstad traveled to Germany, Italy, Switzerland and Iowa’s sister state of Kosovo during the 10-day journey.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A Des Moines police lieutenant has been injured in an off-duty accident. Police Sergeant Jason Halifax says Lieutenant Joe Gonzalez was working Saturday at the World Food Prize building in downtown Des Moines. Gonzalez was providing uniformed security outside the building when he was struck by a truck. Gonzalez was taken to a Des Moines hospital, where he was being treated Saturday night for two collapsed lungs, broken ribs and other injuries.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The state Department of Transportation has designed an app for smartphones and tablets that organizes the agency’s multiple other apps. Officials say “myIowaDOT” helps users find all agency resources under one app instead of making them search for each individual app developed by the agency. The multi-use app is free.

Perry finishes strong to win

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Kenny Perry has completed his comeback from 10 shots down after the second round to win the U.S. Senior Open. Perry shot a final-round 63 and won his second straight senior major by five strokes over Fred Funk. His 64-63 finish set a tournament record for the last 36 holes.

The 52-year-old Kentuckian started the final round two shots behind leader Michael Allen, but was in front to stay after he birdied the second and third holes and Allen bogeyed the third. Perry won the Senior Players Championship two weeks ago.

Teenager Spieth is youngest PGA winner in 82 years

SILVIS, Ill. (AP) — Nineteen-year-old Jordan Spieth outlasted David Hearn and Zach Johnson on the fifth hole of a playoff to win the John Deere Classic on Sunday, becoming the youngest winner on the PGA Tour in 82 years. Spieth hit a two-foot par putt to earn a spot in next week’s British Open. He is also the first teenager to win since Ralph Guldahl took the Santa Monica Open in 1931. Spieth forced his way into the playoff by holing out of the bunker from 44 feet on the final hole of regulation.

Spieth, Hearn and Johnson made par on the first four playoff holes, but Spieth made another par while Johnson and Hearn scored bogeys on the fifth.
