Cardinals upend Phillies 3-1

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Lance Lynn allowed one run over seven innings and the St. Louis Cardinals scored three times in the third in a 3-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday. Matt Carpenter, Jon Jay and Matt Adams drove in runs for the Cardinals, who have won seven of nine. Philadelphia has lost five in a row, tying a season high. The Phillies also dropped five straight from June 7-12.

St. Louis has the most wins in the majors at 62 and is a season-high 25 games over .500. Lynn (12-5) had dropped four of his previous five decisions and was 3-4 with a 6.32 ERA in his past eight starts.

Audubon County Fair Queen Announced

A great crowd gathered Thursday (7/25) night at the grandstand at the Audubon County Fairgrounds for the crowning ceremony of the 2013 Audubon County Fair Queen. Nine candidates were vying for the crown including: Teagan Albright, Jan Asberry, Maddie Christensen, Megan Deist, Chansea Nelson, Jayce Nelson, Courtney Rudolph, Amanda Steffes, and Mary Wede.

The candidates attended a meal and interview event on Wednesday, July 17th at the Audubon County Extension Office to determine the winners.  The 2013 Audubon County Fair Queen is Jan Asberry, Daughter of John and Denise Asberry of Exira.  The first runner-up was Chansea Nelson, Daughter of Dave and Trudy Nelson of Exira.  The second runner-up was Maddie Christensen, Daughter of Tom and Teresa Christensen of Audubon.

The royalty were crowned by 2012 Queen Katelyn Asmus and now Jan Asberry will get to compete at the Iowa State Fair Queen Pageant August 6th-10th.  The Audubon County Fair continues through Tuesday, July 30th.

Cass County Fair Royalty Named

The Cass County Fair King and Queen contest took place on Thursday, July 25th at the Cass County Fairgrounds.  A large crowd waited out some rain at the end of the contest to find out the winners.   The 2013 Cass County Fair King was Tanner Potter of the Griswold Clubsters, son of Brent and Amy Potter.  The Prince was Blake Miller of the Grant Guys and Gals and CAM FFA, son of Gary and Shelly Miller.  Mr. Congeniality went to Clint Hansen of the Grove HOT and Atlantic FFA, son of Mike and Becky Dreager.

The 2013 Cass County Fair Queen title was awarded to Larissa Backhaus of the Griswold Clubsters and Griswold FFA, daughter of Bill and Jenny Backhaus.  Princess was Mikayla Somers of the Bear Grove Blazers, daughter of Guy and Kathy Somers.  Miss Congeniality went to Emily Jacobsen of the Bear Grove Blazers and Atlantic FFA. Emily is  the daughter of Mike Jacobsen and Darla Jacobsen.

Another award handed out was the KJAN/Brownfield Ag News Network Ag Youth Award.  That honor was given to Emily Jacobsen of Atlantic.  The Brownfield Ag News Network and KJAN partner in this award each year to honor outstanding youth and acknowledge their contribution to agriculture in the area.

The Cass County Fair continues through Tuesday, July 30.

Red Man Arrested on Warrant

The Red Oak Police Department reports the arrest of 31-year old Tyler Anthony Bond of Red Oak on a violation of Failure to Appear/Failure to Pay Child Support. Bond was transported to the Montgomery County Law Center and his bond has been set at $1,000.

HAZEL EMMA KRUEGER, 84, of Walnut died Wed., July 24th at the Atlantic Nursing and Rehab Center. Funeral service for HAZEL EMMA KRUEGER will be held at 10:00-a.m. Mon., July 29th in Peace United Church of Christ in Walnut. Pauley Jones Funeral Home in Avoca has the arrangements.

Visitation will be from 3:00 to 8:00-p.m. Sun., July 28th at the funeral home with family greeting friends from 6:00 to 8:00-p.m.

Burial will be in Layton Township Cemetery in Walnut.

HAZEL EMMA KRUEGER is survived by:

Children:  Lorie Lambrecht of Nebraska City, NE; Jeff (Leanne) Krueger of Walnut; and Julie (Jon) Childs of Ames

Cardinals recall Rzepczynski, option Martinez

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals recalled Marc Rzepczynski from Triple-A Memphis on Thursday, giving them three left-handed relievers. Rookie right-hander Carlos Martinez was optioned to Memphis.

The 27-year-old Rzepczynski was demoted to the minors April 29 and was 1-2 with a 3.07 ERA at Memphis while limiting left-handed hitters to a .185 batting average. Rzepczynski appeared in 70 games with St. Louis last season.

The 21-year-old Martinez was the organization’s minor league pitcher of the month in June and is among their top prospects for a future rotation spot. He has a 5.56 ERA in 10 games covering 11 1-3 innings with St. Louis.

Arrests in Adams County

News

The Adams County Sheriff’s Office reports the arrest of four people today (Thursday) on a variety of charges. An unnamed juvenile female from Villisca was arrested for Conspiracy to Deliver a Controlled Substance. No bond was set. Matthew Cross, of Corning, was arrested Thursday on a of Delivery of a Controlled Substance charge related to previous incidents in Adams County.

Sheriff’s officials say Jeremy Cross, of Corning, was arrested Thursday after deputies along with the Adams County K-9 unit and a Tri-County Narcotics officer executed a search warrant in Corning. During the search, items were located that led to Cross being charged with Conspiracy to Deliver Narcotics, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Child Endangerment. Cross was being held in the Adams County Jail without bond.

And, a probation check Thursday morning by deputies with the Adams County Sheriff’s Office, K-9 Unit and the Tri-County Narcotics Office at the residence of Gary Seaman, in Corning, led to his arrest. During the check Seaman was found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia which resulted in charges of Violation Probation and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. He was being held in the jail without bond.
