(Update!) Teen arrested in death of 5-year-old Iowa boy

LOGAN, Iowa (AP) — A 17-year-old has been arrested in connection with the death of a 5-year-old boy whose body was found a western Iowa ravine. The Harrison County Sheriff’s office says Cody Metzker-Madsen was charged with first degree murder in the death that was reported Saturday evening. The boy’s caregivers found his body in a ravine in rural Harrison County Saturday.

Metzker-Madsen is being held in the Harrison County jail under a $500,000 bond. In Iowa, first-degree murder is a Class A felony and is punishable by a mandatory sentence of life in prison. Authorities say the teen and the 5-year-old had been living together in the same foster home since early August. Authorities did not immediately release the child’s name. An autopsy is scheduled to be performed Monday morning.

HAROLD GEORGE ZVORAK, 87, of Walnut, died Fri., Aug. 30th, at his home. A Celebration of Life service for HAROLD ZVORAK will be held 6-p.m. Wed., Sept. 4th, at the Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Avoca.

The family will greet friends at the funeral home from 4-to 6-pm, Wednesday.

Burial will be at 2-p.m. Thursday, Sept 5th, in the Russell, MN Cemetery.

His wife – Isabel Zvorak, of Walnut.

His Son – Curt Beireis, of Carson.

His daughter – Laura Samel, of Lafayette, CO.

His step-daughter: Michel (Reggie) Prince, of North St. Paul, MN.

And 4 grandchildren.

ELEANOR MARIE ALLEN, 93, of Harlan, died Fri., Aug. 30th, at the Elm Crest Retirement Home. Funeral services for ELEANOR ALLEN will be held 2-p.m. Wed., Sept. 4th, at the Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Harlan.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday (9/3), from 1-p.m. to 9-p.m., with the family present from 6-to 8-pm.

Burial will be in the Harlan Cemetery.

ELEANOR ALLEN is survived by:

Her sons – Stephen (Jane) Allen, of Basking Ridge, NJ; Joseph (Karen) Allen, of Bryan, TX; Jeffrey (Linda) Allen, of Rogers, AR; and Samuel (Jill) Allen, of Clayton, NC.

Her sister – Rosalie (Glenn) French, of Harlan.

Her brother – Dale (Phyllis) Arentson, of Eldridge, IA.

11 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Cardinals top Pirates 7-2, tie for NL Central lead

PITTSBURGH (AP) – Matt Holliday and David Freese drove in two runs apiece, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-2 on Sunday to move back into a tie for the NL Central lead. Matt Carpenter, Allen Craig, Yadier Molina and Shane Robinson added two hits each for St. Louis, which jumped on Pittsburgh rookie Kris Johnson (0-2) early to snap a three-game skid.

Joe Kelly (7-3) allowed one run and four hits in six solid innings to win his fourth straight start. Kelly struck out five and walked two to remain unbeaten since June 5.  Justin Morneau went 1 for 3 in his debut with the Pirates a day after Pittsburgh acquired the first baseman from Minnesota to bolster the franchise’s bid for its first playoff appearance in 21 years.

Child, 5, found dead in western Iowa ravine

LOGAN, Iowa (AP) – Authorities are investigating the death of a 5-year-old child who was found in a western Iowa ravine. KETV reports the child was found Saturday evening in rural Harrison County.  Harrison County officials say the child was reported missing and possibly injured around 7:15 Saturday.

Then the child’s caregivers told sheriff’s deputies that the child was found in a ravine and appeared to be dead. Deputies confirmed the child was dead. Authorities did not immediately release the child’s name or many other details about the death.

WILMA C. BEST, 94, of Fremont, NE (& formerly of Shelby), died Sat., Aug. 31st, in  Fremont. Funeral services for WILMA BEST will be held 10:30-a.m. Wed., Sept. 4th, at the Shelby United Methodist Church. Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Shelby has the arrangements.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 1-to 9-pm Tue., Sept. 3rd, where the family will greet friends from 6-to 8-pm.

Chiefs’ new brain trust putting stamp on roster

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs hope they’ve finally assembled the right 53. That was the phrase that former general manager Scott Pioli used to describe his ideal roster, but he never really came close to achieving it. In fact, his pursuit of the right 53 ended with a 2-14 record last year.

The Chiefs have overhauled that roster this year under new GM John Dorsey and coach Andy Reid. The result is 26 newcomers on the roster, and it could soon be 27 when they fill a roster spot that still remains open. Among them are 10 rookies, two of them Ivy Leaguers.

Dorsey and Reid will find out whether they’re close to their right 53 when they open the season next Sunday at Jacksonville.

Gomez, Moffatt win Des Moines triathlon

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Spain’s Javier Gomez took the lead with about a mile left in the run to defend his title in the Hy-Vee Triathlon Sunday in Des Moines, Iowa. Emma Moffatt of Australia won the women’s race. Gomez and Moffatt each earned $100,000 for their victories.

Though the event’s purse was cut from $1.1 million to $500,000 this year, it still offers the biggest prize in the world for Olympic-style distance triathlons. Gomez, the silver medalist from the London Games, was more than minute behind the leaders after the cycling portion of the event before catching them in the run. American Hunter Kemper was second, finishing 12 seconds behind Gomez.

Moffatt, who won in Des Moines in 2009 and finished second twice, was 1:26 ahead of runner-up Melissa Hauschildt.

Ford recalls 370,000 cars: Iowa included

NEW YORK (AP) — Ford is recalling 370,000 cars due to potential corrosion to their steering shaft that may result in loss of steering. No incidents or injuries have been reported. The cars include 2005 to 2011 Ford Crown Victoria, Mercury Grand Marquis and Lincoln Town Cars. About 355,000 are in the U.S. and 15,000 in Canada. Dealers will inspect the cars and may replace the lower intermediate steering shaft and if necessary resecure a lower steering column bearing and replace the upper intermediate steering shaft.

States included in the recall are: Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, Wisconsin and West Virginia.

Owners in other states can also ask for inspections and repairs.

Clarinda man dies in 1-vehicle crash near Glenwood, Sunday

GLENWOOD, Iowa (AP) — Iowa authorities are investigating a one-vehicle crash that killed a 24-year-old man near Glenwood. The Iowa State Patrol says Jake William Champ, of Clarinda, died after the crash around 6:30 a.m. on Sunday.

Champ was driving northbound on 221st Street north of Glenwood when he lost control of his 2007 Ford Fusion and drove down a steep embankment. The car hit several trees and rolled before landing on its roof, trapping Champ inside. Officials say he died at the scene.
