Cardinals calling up 2B Kolten Wong

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals will purchase the contract of one of their top prospects, second baseman Kolten Wong, from Triple-A Memphis prior to today’s (Friday’s) game at the Chicago Cubs. Outfielder Adron Chambers was optioned to Memphis after the Cardinals beat Pittsburgh 6-5 in 12 innings Thursday.

The 22-year-old Wong was a first-round draft pick and the 22nd overall pick in 2011. He has played was batting .303 in 107 games at Memphis with 21 doubles, eight triples, 10 home runs and 20 steals. Matt Carpenter has had a breakout year at second base and in the leadoff spot, leading the National League with 48 multi-hit games and 40 doubles, but can also play corner outfield spots and third base.

Grinnell resident places first in Iowa City diving semifinals

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Local favorite Deidre Freeman finished first in the women’s 3-meter semifinals and Steele Johnson topped the men’s 10-meter field Thursday night in the U.S. national diving championships. Freeman, the former University of Iowa star from Grinnell, scored 321.60 points to finish first in the semifinals after finishing 10th in the morning quarterfinals. Emma Ivory-Ganja qualified second at 283.90, and Maren Taylor, the gold medalist in the 1-meter Tuesday, was third at 283.60.

Johnson, the defending 10-meter champion from Carmel, Indiana scored 494.25 points in the platform semifinals. David Dinsmore was second at 416.30, followed by Jordan Windle at 399.75. The top 12 in each event advanced to the finals.

RIVERSIDE, Iowa (AP) — State regulators have denied a company’s request to renew its state gambling license for a casino in Sioux City. The City Journal reports the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission rejected Argosy Sioux City’s license request but didn’t set a closing date for the company’s floating casino. The commission will let the casino remain open while owner Penn National Gaming Company appeals its earlier rulings.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A new report suggests that healthy economic growth slowed down this month in rural areas of 10 Midwest states. Creighton University economist Ernie Goss oversees the monthly survey of rural bankers from Omaha. He says lower commodity prices are dampening the current outlook for the farm economy.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa’s insurance regulator has approved the acquisition of West Des Moines-based AvivaUSA and subsidiaries by Athene Holding Limited. Iowa Insurance Commissioner Nick Gerhart said yesterday he approved the acquisition with conditions which prohibit Aviva Life from paying dividends or other distributions to shareholders for five years unless previously approved. Aviva will be rebranded Athene USA.

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — A 17-year-old Treynor High School student has been charged with third-degree sex abuse and kidnapping in connection with two incidents last November. KETV television reported yesterday the teen is accused in court documents of removing one victim’s clothes and fondling her and refusing to allow her to leave his pickup truck. The Associated Press generally doesn’t name juveniles accused of a crime or their family members.

VERNON ROACH, JR., 70, of rural Greenfield, died Thu., Aug. 15th, 2013, at his home. Funeral services for VERNON ROACH, JR., will be held 1:30-p.m. Mon., Aug. 19th, at the Cornerstone Fellowship Church in Greenfield. Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield has the arrangements.

Visitation will be held Sunday (8/18), from 2-until 7pm, at the funeral home, where the family will greet friends from 5-to 7-pm. Online condolences may be left to the family at www.steenfunerals.com.

Burial will be in the Greenfield Cemetery, with Masonic Services conducted by the Greenfield Crusade Lodge No. 386 A.F. & A.M.

Memorials may be directed to the Little Lambs Preschool or to the Greenfield Public Library.

VERNON ROACH, JR., is survived by:

Her wife – Shirley Roach, of Greenfield.

His daughter – Jennifer (Greg) Eshelman, of Greenfield.

His son – James (Marlo) Roach, of Greenfield.

Cardinals beat Pirates 6-5 in 12 innings

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Matt Carpenter had four hits and scored the winning run on Matt Holliday’s single in the 12th inning, helping the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-5 on Thursday for their second extra-inning triumph over the NL Central leaders in three days.

The Cardinals took two of three in the series to pull within two games of the sagging Pirates, who have dropped five of six. St. Louis won 4-3 in 14 innings in the series opener on Tuesday night. Rookie Kevin Siegrist (1-1), St. Louis’ seventh pitcher, struck out two in a perfect 12th against the heart of the Pirates order.

I-80 eastbound lane near Shelby re-opens

The Iowa DOT reports that as of 5:56-p.m., Interstate 80 eastbound between Exit 29: County Road L66 (near Minden) and Exit 34: County Road M16 (near Shelby), has reopened to both lanes of traffic. One lane had been closed since just before 3-p.m. due to a motorcycle accident. Details concerning the accident are not currently available.

Chiefs’ Smith gets to square off against ex team

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Alex Smith says that he has no hard feelings when it comes to the San Francisco 49ers. That doesn’t mean he wouldn’t like to play well Friday night. Smith will be leading the Kansas City Chiefs into Arrowhead Stadium for the first time as their starting quarterback against his former team.

Smith had resurrected his career in San Francisco before getting hurt last season. When he was healthy enough to return, he found he had lost his job to Colin Kaepernick, and then had to watch as Kaepernick led the 49ers to the Super Bowl.

Smith was traded to the Chiefs in the offseason and now wants to show the 49ers what they discarded, even if he says the split was amicable.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office reports the arrest today (Thursday) of Michelle Neville of Red Oak on a valid Montgomery County warrant for a violation of probation. Neville is currently being held at the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office on $7,500 bond.

MAVIS C. MOREE, 90, of Red Oak died Thursday, August 15th at the Nebraska Methodist Hospital in Omaha.  Funeral services for MAVIS C. MOREE will be held on Monday, August 19th at 10:30 am in the Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel in Red Oak.  The Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel in Red Oak has the arrangements.

Former Harlan teacher to be arraigned by the end of August

Arraignment in the case of a former Harlan teacher charged with felony Sexual Exploitation by a School Employee and and Aggravated Serious Misdemeanor charge of Assault with Intent to Commit Sexual Abuse, is scheduled to take place later this month.

According to online court records, 72-year old Lee Gordon Nelson, of Harlan, is scheduled to appear in Shelby County District Court on August 26th. His trial will take place October 29th.  Nelson plead not guilty to charges on July 26th. He remains free on $7,000 bond.  If convicted on both charges, Lee faces up to seven-years in prison and fines amounting to nearly $14,000.

According to the Iowa DCI, a 17 year old female and her parents contacted Harlan police on May 30th, 2013, to report that since October, 2012, Nelson had been saying rude and inappropriate things to the victim, as well as touching her inappropriately. The incidents allegedly occurred at school, on band trips and at his residence.

Nelson was employed with the Harlan Community School District for 35 years, before the school board accepted his resignation on April 22nd.
