IDPH offers guidelines for keeping sick children out of the classroom

News

August 22nd, 2013 by admin

With school in full swing in most parts of Iowa, parents once again face that early morning decision – is my child too sick for school? School districts often provide guidelines for keeping children out of the classroom and the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) encourages parents to keep their children home from school when ill not only for their own child’s health, but to avoid the spread of disease to other students.

“There are times when a parent can clearly see their child is too ill for school,” said IDPH Medical Director, Dr. Patricia Quinlisk. “Other times, it’s not so clear. While we understand the challenges parents who work outside the home face when trying to accommodate a child who needs to stay home from school, it’s so important that children who have a contagious illness don’t come to class to stop them from spreading whatever they have to the other children. ”

In general, symptoms that indicate a day home from school is needed and consulting with the child’s health care provider is appropriate include:

fever (temperature higher than 100.4 degrees F. when taken by mouth);
severe sore throat that lasts more than 48 hours, especially when accompanied by a fever;
a significant rash, particularly when other symptoms are present;
sores in the mouth with drooling;
red eyes (pink eye);
skin infection with erupting sores;
severe ear pain;
an uncontrolled cough or difficulty breathing;
diarrhea;
vomiting more than 2 times in 24 hours;
severe headache, especially with a fever or
any symptoms that suggest a more serious illness, such as sluggishness, persistent crying, or irritability.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, children may be allowed to return to school after symptoms are gone for at least 24 hours. For information on specific childhood illnesses and what to do regarding school attendance, visit www.idph.state.ia.us/hcci/common/pdf/childhood_illness_guide.pdf.

Cardinals Voice Shannon Recovering from Heart Surgery

Sports

August 22nd, 2013 by Jim Field

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Mike Shannon, the former St. Louis Cardinals third baseman who has been a broadcaster for the team for more than 40 years, is recovering after heart surgery.

The Cardinals said Wednesday that the 74-year-old Shannon is resting comfortably. The team says he had successful surgery Monday to replace his aorta valve.

Shannon, in a statement through the team, thanked well-wishers and said he expects to return to the broadcast booth before the end of the regular season.

Shannon played on three World Series teams during a nine-year career from 1962 to 1970, all with St. Louis. He hit .255 with 68 homers for his career.

He joined the radio broadcast starting in 1972, paired for many years with Hall of Fame broadcaster Jack Buck.

Chiefs Star Bowe has Refreshed Outlook on Life

Sports

August 22nd, 2013 by Jim Field

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe has a new contract, a new coach and a new quarterback, and with all of that a new sense of happiness when he steps on the field.

Bowe says he’s “blessed to be alive,” and that’s clear in his demeanor.

Once a moody wide receiver with a less-than-sparkling reputation, Bowe can be caught dancing around during lulls in practice and spending every extra second afterward signing autographs.

He says that he’s “just trying to let loose and be joyful,” and he thinks that may help him have one of his best seasons.

He’s in the first year of his new five-year deal, and with quarterback Alex Smith throwing him the ball, is certain that he’ll once again be among the league’s best wide receivers.

Beltran, Craig Homer to Lift Cards over Brewers

Sports

August 22nd, 2013 by Jim Field

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Carlos Beltran and Allen Craig hit towering home runs in St. Louis’ six-run second inning, and the Cardinals held off the Milwaukee Brewers 8-6 on Wednesday.

Matt Holliday also homered and Shane Robinson had three hits for the Cardinals, who are slightly behind the Pittsburgh Pirates in the NL Central race.

After taking a one-run lead in the first inning on a double by Craig, the Cardinals went ahead 7-0 in the second off Brewers starter Tom Gorzelanny (3-5). Starting pitcher Jake Westbrook hit a bases-loaded double into the left-center field gap that scored two runs. He entered the game hitting only .167 with two RBIs this season.

Following Matt Carpenter’s sacrifice fly, Beltran launched a two-run shot that caromed off the center-field scoreboard. With two out, Craig hit a solo homer to right-center.
