New trial requested for man found guilty in fatal Audubon County accident

News

July 8th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

Attorneys for a southern Iowa man who was found guilty on charges associated with a 2011 fatal accident in Audubon County have asked for a new trial. The motion was filed Friday in the case against 57-year old Kendall L. Ware, of Lineville. Late last May, a jury found Ware guilty on felony charges of Vehicular Homicide/OWI and Serious Injury by Vehicle, in connection with an October 19th, 2011 accident on Highway 71 north of Brayton, that claimed the life of 17-year old Kristopher Crawley, of Hamlin, and injured three other persons. An investigation determined Ware had a blood alcohol content of more than two-and-half times the legal limit.

Sentencing is scheduled to take place at 10-a.m. in Audubon County District Court. Ware faces a maximum time in prison of 30-years on the combined charges, and fines of anywhere from $750 to $7,500 for the Serious Injury by vehicle charge, plus court costs and attorney’s fees.

NE man injured during rollover accident Sunday in Pott. Co.

News

July 8th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

A Nebraska man was injured Sunday, when the SUV he was driving went out of control and rolled several times, in Pottawattamie County. The Iowa State Patrol reports 19-year old Juwan Holland, of Omaha, was transported by Neola Rescue to Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs. Officials say he was wearing a seat belt. The accident happened just before 4-p.m. on Interstate 80 eastbound, near mile marker 22.

Officials say when the 2004 GMC Envoy Holland was driving slipped-off onto the shoulder of the road, Holland overcorrected and sent the vehicle into a skid. The SUV rolled several times and crashed through a fence before landing in a corn field.

Sweet corn grower expects to set a record for late start

Ag/Outdoor

July 8th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

A major producer in central Iowa expects to set a record again this year when it comes to picking sweet corn. Ron Deardorff grows 200 acres of sweet corn near Adel, and says when he begins pulling ears off the stalks next week — it’ll be a complete turnaround from last year. “Last year we were about a week ahead of normal. In in these two years back to back, last year was the earliest ever started picking and I think this year will be the latest I ever started,” Deardorff says. Unseasonably warm and dry conditions last year got the sweet corn off to a quick start last year. Deardorff says the plants had to wait a bit this year before the growth started picking up.

“The last several weeks the corn is really growing, the color is good, it looks nice and healthy. It’s just been delayed in growth from the cool wet April and May. That’s really the only problem,” according to Deardorff. The early arrival of the summer favorite caught everyone’s attention last year, and now that attention is on the late arrival of sweet corn this year. Deardorff finds all the attention surprising. “Who would have thought in 1967 when I started farming that someday that I would be growing this much sweet corn and being contacted by the media to talk about the crop,” Deardorff asked. Deardorff supplies several dozen grocery stores and roadside stands in the Des Moines area. There are some others who grow early hybrids that could hit the street later this week, but Deardorff says he won’t rush things and expects to have corn early next week.

Iowa State’s young guards seek playing time

Sports

July 8th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A major part of Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg’s plan to replace his starting backcourt is to lean on transfers again. But the Cyclones also have a host of young guards eager to show Hoiberg that the solution was already on the roster. Iowa State’s hopes for a third straight trip to the NCAA tournament next season rest largely on how it overcomes the loss of guards Korie Lucious, Chris Babb and Tyrus McGee.

Hoiberg brought in former Marshall star DeAndre Kane and junior college standout K.J. Bluford with the expectations that both will compete for significant minutes. But the Cyclones have four underclassmen guards and a veteran backup in Bubu Palo. None of them are planning to spend the season on the bench either.

Freshman point guard Monte Morris says the players are just going to see how the chips fall.
