KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs are ready to move on after last year’s 2-14 debacle and countless off-the-field distractions. The Chiefs have a new general manager in John Dorsey, a new coach in Andy Reid and a new quarterback in Alex Smith leading a new-look team into its season opener Sept. 8 at Jacksonville.

The Chiefs had more than 50 newcomers on the 90-man roster that reported to training camp, and just five of the 22 on their two-deep were in the same spot as they were for the final game of last season.

Who’s fastest: Chiefs’ Charles or Royals’ Dyson?

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The challenge has been laid down. All that’s separating Royals outfielder Jarrod Dyson and Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles from deciding the fastest man in Kansas City sports is about 300 yards of parking lot between Kauffman Stadium and Arrowhead Stadium. Probably the folks in charge of their teams, too.

The match race is unlikely to ever happen in the city that produced former 100-meter world-record holder Maurice Green. There’s too much injury risk to line them up just for fun. Sure is a compelling conversation piece, though.

Dyson has swiped 25 bases in just 60 games this season, and said “I’m not afraid of nobody.” Charles is the former junior Olympian who said, “If he wants to put on a show, I’m never going to back down from anyone.”

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — The idle Fort Calhoun nuclear power plant is loaded with fuel for the first time in more than two years, and utility officials say it will be ready to operate safely if regulators allow it to restart. Omaha Public Power District officials met with Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff Tuesday to discuss the future of the plant 20 miles north of Omaha.Ft. Calhoun NPP

Plant manager Mike Prospero said the utility plans to heat up the plant in late September without using nuclear power. That will allow workers to inspect parts that haven’t been used regularly since Fort Calhoun shut down for maintenance in April 2011.

Regulators have kept the plant closed to address safety and security concerns discovered after a small fire and massive flooding along the Missouri River in 2011.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. Tight end Tony Moeaki has a fractured shoulder and Travis Kelce has been out with a bruised knee.

Newsome had five catches for 73 yards in six games last season. He’s played in eight career games with the Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars. The Chiefs play the Green Bay Packers on Thursday night at Arrowhead Stadium. They’ll have to trim their roster to 53 players by Saturday.

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Food and Drug Administration says a Mexico farm linked to an outbreak of severe stomach illnesses in two states can resume operations because no food safety violations have been found there. The number of people sickened around the country has topped 600.

The FDA said Tuesday that Taylor Farms de Mexico could resume operations after investigators found conditions there “in accordance with known food safety protocols.” The firm shut down voluntarily after its salad mix served at Olive Garden and Red Lobster restaurants was linked to 242 cyclospora infections in Nebraska and Iowa. Similar illnesses in 20 other states were never definitively linked to the farm.

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it is working with Texas to try and discover the source of more than 250 cyclospora infections there.
