EHK School Board to act on contracts & hold closed session

Members of the Elk Horn-Kimballton Board of Education will meet this evening in the Family and Consumer Science Room, at the High School in Elk Horn. During the 7-p.m. session, under the Consent Agenda, the Board will act on approving contracts with: Tony Santiseban, Junior High Boys Basketball/Assistant High School Basketball Coach, and Kelly Juhl, Assistant High School Girls Basketball Coach. They will also act on appointing a School Board lawyer, and Secretary/Treasurer as well as Business Manager.

Under “New Business,” the EHK Board will discuss and likely act on approving: contracts with HTS, Midwest Lock and Security, and Southwestern Community College; a bid for an I-T Room heat pump; and the high school and teacher handbooks.

Prior to adjourning for the evening, the Board will enter into a closed session per Iowa Code, to “Evaluate the professional competency of an individual whose hiring is being considered when necessary to prevent needless and irreparable injury to that individual’s reputation.”

Afterward, they will return from the closed session to discuss and act on Superintendent Dean Schnoes’ contract.

Griswold School Board to act on numerous matters this evening

The Griswold School Board has a full slate of decisions to make this evening, during a regular meeting in the Central Office Board Room at the Middle School/High School building. During the “New Business” portion of  the 5:30-p.m. session, the board will act on approving: A high school boiler system, locker room, and bathroom remodel; A proposal from Massena Telephone Company; 2013-2014 Senior Meals; Bakery, Dairy, Snow Removal and Trash bids. The Board will also make a decision with regard to a School Resource Officer (SRO).

In addition, they are scheduled to appoint a Board Secretary, Business Manager, and School Attorney, as well as designate the Bank Depository and limits. Following other business, the Griswold School Board will enter into the closed session, to evaluate the performance of Superintendent Dana Kunze, and talk with him about his goals for the upcoming school year.

CAM School Board will meet this evening

The CAM School District’s Board of Education is scheduled to meet at 7-p.m.  During their regular session in the CAM High School Media Center, the Board will discuss and possibly take action on matters pertaining to: The Multi-Purpose building; On-line Academy open enrollment applications; the Superintendent’s and other contracts; any resignations; Milk and Lunch bids, and SIAC recommendations. They are also expected to set the 2013-2014 school lunch price, and fees.

Baseball Today on KJAN

Atlantic will host Sioux City East for a boys baseball doubleheader today and you can hear both games on KJAN.  These will be the final regular season games of the year for the Trojans.  It will be an early start today, as we are on the air at 3:45 with the first pitch scheduled for 4:00 for game one.  Game two will follow.  You can listen on the radio at AM 1220 or FM 101.1, on the web at www.kjan.com or on your smartphones with the free KJAN app.

Man’s body recovered from western Iowa river

OTO, Iowa (AP) – Authorities say a 23-year-old Ida County man has drowned in an accident on the Little Sioux River near Oto in western Iowa. Woodbury County Sheriff’s Sgt. Jim Bauerly says the man was with three friends when he fell into the swift-flowing river about 10:30 a.m. Sunday.   One of the friends jumped in to help but was unable to get him out of the river.
The man’s body was recovered a little before 2 p.m., about 30 yards from where he’d fallen in. His name hasn’t been released yet.

LAURA K. PARDEE, 102, of Audubon, died Sun., July 14th, at the Audubon County Memorial Hospital. A Mass of Christian Burial service for LAURA PARDEE will be held 10:30-a.m. Thu., July 18th, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Audubon. Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon has the arrangements.

Friends may call at the funeral home, where the family visitation begins 6-p.m. Wednesday (7/17), and a Scripture service takes place at 7-p.m.

Burial will be in the St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery in Audubon.

LAURA PARDEE is survived by:

Her daughters – Mary Lee Jensen, of Exira, and Cheryl (Peter) Huyck, of Iowa City.

6 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren,  1 great-great grandchild, other relatives & friends.

VERNON D. SCHNACK, 73, of Walnut (& formerly of Harlan), died Sun., July 14th, at his home. Funeral service for VERNON SCHNACK will be held at 10:00-a.m. Wed., July 17th in the Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan.

Friends may call from 2:00-9:00-p.m. Tues., July 16th at the funeral home where family will greet friends from 6:00 to 8:00-p.m.

Burial will be in the Harlan Cemetery.

Tabor residents arrested; stolen vehicles recovered

A couple from Tabor, in Fremont County, were arrested Sunday on a theft-and drug-related charges. The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office reports 27-year old’s Jeremy and Charlene Chaney were taken into custody following the execution of a search warrant on their property located at 505 Vine Street, in Tabor.

During the search, two stolen vehicles were recovered. The Chaney’s each face charges that include Possession of Stolen Property, Possession of an Offensive Weapons, Possession of Methamphetamine, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. The couple was being held in the Fremont County Jail on $21,300 bond.
