Johnson scores 4 TDs, N. Iowa beats Iowa St 28-20

AMES, Iowa (AP) — David Johnson ran for a career-high 199 yards and two touchdowns and caught passes for two more scores to lead Northern Iowa past Iowa State 28-20 on Saturday night.

Northern Iowa, seeking a return to the FCS playoffs after a rare losing record in 2012, jumped to a 21-7 lead on a steamy Midwest evening and handed Iowa State its first season-opening loss in five seasons under coach Paul Rhoads. It was just the fifth victory for the Panthers in 28 games with the Cyclones, who are coming off two straight bowl appearances.

Iowa State drew to 21-20 on Cole Netten’s third-quarter field goals of 23 and 38 yards, the first of his career. But Johnson caught a short pass from Kollmorgen, slipped through three defenders and went 29 yards for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter for an eight-point lead that held up.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have cut 20 players, including veteran running back Shaun Draughn, and waived two other injured players to reach the 53-man roster limit by Saturday’s deadline. Tight end Tony Moeaki fractured his shoulder in a preseason game against Pittsburgh and offensive lineman Ricky Henry ruptured his bicep in the Chiefs’ game against Green Bay. Both of them will end up on injured reserve if they pass through waivers without getting claimed.

Draughn was beaten out by Cyrus Gray for the No. 3 running back job behind Jamaal Charles and Knile Davis in one of the few battles to come down to the wire. Wide receivers Rico Richardson and Josh Bellamy were beaten out by Devon Wylie and Junior Hemingway for roster spots.

Palo dismissed from Iowa State basketball team

Sports

August 31st, 2013 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State basketball player Bubu Palo, reinstated last January after he served a suspension, has been dismissed from the team. Palo originally was suspended last year after being charged with second-degree sexual assault. That charge was dropped in January of this year and the university’s Office of Judicial Affairs cleared him to play, allowing him to return to the team.

But that decision was appealed, the university said in a statement released Saturday, and Palo then was found to have violated ISU’s Student Code of Conduct, resulting in his dismissal. Palo, a senior from Ames and a reserve guard, played in 17 games last season, averaging 2.8 points. 1.4 rebounds and 1.4 assists.
