Chiefs use waiver wire as roster overhaul goes on

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs began working in earnest Monday for their season opener at Jacksonville while also trying to work seven new players into the fold. The Chiefs were awarded them off the waiver wire Sunday, while also cutting loose six more as they continue to churn the bottom of the roster. Because they had the No. 1 selection in the NFL draft, the Chiefs also had the top priority in claiming players released by other teams.

The series of moves they made Sunday resulted in a 53-man roster with 30 newcomers heading into Sunday’s opener against the Jaguars. That includes all three quarterbacks and all the tight ends. “If there’s a time to do it,” GM John Dorsey said of the overhaul, “the time is now.”

Cardinals’ Molina leaves game with sore wrist

CINCINNATI (AP) — Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina left a game against the Cincinnati Reds with a sore left wrist. Molina grounded out and flied out in his two at-bats before being replaced by Rob Johnson for the bottom of the fifth inning on Monday. The Reds led 6-2. Molina missed 14 games with a strained right knee. He was activated off the disabled list on Aug. 15 and had started 15 games, with manager Mike Matheny going easy on him to prevent a recurrence of the knee problem.

The Cardinals also were missing right fielder Carlos Beltran for the start of their four-game series. Beltran missed his second straight game with a stiff back. Matheny held him out as a precaution. St. Louis and Pittsburgh were tied for the NL Central lead.

LOGAN, Iowa (AP) — The cause of death of a 5-year-old boy found in a western Iowa ravine has not yet been released. An autopsy on the boy’s body was completed yesterday but the Iowa medical examiner’s office is conducting further laboratory tests before a definitive cause is released.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Farmers in central Iowa are finding more damage from a weekend storm that passed though Iowa with enough wind to flatten corn plants in some fields and damage trees. Farmers in Dallas County say the early Sunday morning storm brought an end to the recent heat wave but also packed strong wind. No injuries were reported from the storms, which brought a 20-degree drop in high temperatures to Iowa breaking the nearly week-long record setting heat wave.

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — A man mistakenly released on bond after he was convicted of making methamphetamine in a Davenport child daycare center, is back in custody. The Quad-City Times reports  Dale Sammy Blumer was returned to jail Saturday. Blumer, who is 35, shouldn’t have been released while awaiting an appeal of his conviction.

DYERSVILLE, Iowa (AP) — The Field of Dreams movie site in Dyersville has taken on the ghostly feel of the Kevin Costner movie shot at the field 24 years ago for an unusual night game. A team of ghost players emerged from the cornfield to play in the first night game at the field on Sunday. About 100 people attended the game at the field featured in the 1989 movie in which an Iowa farmer builds a baseball field and ghostly players from the 1919 World Series return to play.

ADELAIDE MARIE CROGHAN, 86, formerly of Panama, died Sun. Sept. 1st, at the Elm Crest Retirement Community in Harlan. A Mass of Christian Burial service for ADELAIDE CROGHAN will be held 10:30-a.m. Thu., Sept. 5th, at the St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Panama. Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Harlan has the arrangements.

Visitation at the funeral home is from 8-am to 9-pm Wed., Sept. 4th, with a Wake service at 7-p.m.

Burial will be in the St. Mary’s Cemetery.

ADELAIDE CROGHAN is survived by:

7 sons – Michael (Ruth) Croghan, of Littleton, Co; Donald (Kathie) Croghan, of Knoxville, IA; Phil (Jean) Croghan, of Panama; Robert (Janet) Croghan, of Portsmouth; Richard (Janie) Croghan, of Panama; Frank Croghan, of Littleton, CO; & Raymond Croghan, of Earling.

VALERA MAYBERRY, 100, of West Des Moines (& formerly of Atlantic ), died Mon., Sept. 2nd, at her home. Funeral services for VALERA MAYBERRY will be held 10:30-a.m. Fri., Sept. 6th at the Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home in Atlantic.

Visitation at the funeral home is from 6-to 8-pm Thursday, Sept. 5th.

Burial will be in the Atlantic Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation to Mercy Hospice.

VALERA MAYBERRY is survived by:

Her children – Terry (Janet) Mayberry, of West Des Moines; Linda Legg, of Ames, and Merlin (Marcia) Mayberry of Mobile, AL.

Vandals cause neary $1,000 damage to Stanton Softball/Football Field

Vandals caused nearly $1,000 damage to the Stanton Community School District’s softball and football fields over the Labor Day weekend. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office says sometime between 9-p.m. Sunday and 7-a.m. Monday, someone damaged the left field fence of the softball field. Five aluminum fence posts were bent over at ground level, causing an estimated $500 damage. A floater-type tire was also picked-up and rolled over some track hurdles, before being left on the football field.

Trash cans located along a walking trail were dumped over, and two picnic tables were rolled onto their tops. Officials say one of the tables had four metal straps bracing it to the concrete pad that was also damaged. In addition, a wooden bench in the gazebo at the south area of the walking trail was damaged by removing it from its base. The damage, including that perpetrated on the City of Stanton picnic tables, was estimated at $475 altogether.

Reds hit Wainwright hard again, beat Cardinals 7-2

CINCINNATI (AP) — Shin-Soo Choo and Joey Votto homered as Cincinnati roughed up Adam Wainwright for the second start in a row Monday, leading Mat Latos and the Reds to a 7-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in the opener of a four-game series between the NL Central rivals. Latos (14-5) gave up four hits in his first complete game of the season.

The Cardinals took two of three in St. Louis last week, the only loss coming when the Reds tagged Wainwright (15-9) for nine runs in a career-low two innings. They had his number again on Monday, piling up six runs and 10 hits in six innings.

Cincinnati now trails the Cardinals by 2½ games. St. Louis opened the day tied with Pittsburgh for first place. The Reds maintain a comfortable lead for the final NL wild-card spot.

No details release on boy found dead near Logan

LOGAN, Iowa (AP) — The cause of death of a 5-year-old boy found in a western Iowa ravine has not yet been released. An autopsy on the boy’s body was completed today (Monday), but the Iowa medical examiner’s office is conducting further laboratory tests before a definitive cause is released. Dominic Lloyd Lee Elkins, who was found dead Saturday in rural Harrison County, had lived with a foster family near Logan for nearly three weeks. 17-year-old Cody Metzker-Madsen, who lived in the same foster home for nearly three years, has been charged with first-degree murder in the 5-year-old’s death.
