Atlantic School Board to act on several matters Mon. evening

The Atlantic Community School District’s Board of Education will meet Monday evening at the High School, during a regularly scheduled session. During their 7:30-p.m. meeting in the High School Media Center, the Board will hear a special presentation from Ginger Bechtold, and architect Jerry Purdy will update the Board on the Middle School Renovation project.

Among the many action items on their agenda is approval of: the School Resource Officers’ (SRO) program agreement for 2013-2014; A sharing agreement with the Harlan Community School District for a Curriculum Director; an full-time At-Risk Advocate for the EOC/Level 3 Behavior/Preschool program; and lighting and electric bids for the AHS Auditorium lighting project.

The Board will also discuss Capital Projects and Board Training.

VERAL D. SORENSEN, 78, of Exira, died Fri., Sept. 6th, at home. Funeral services for VERAL SORENSEN will be held 1-p.m. Tue., Sept. 10th, at the Kessler Funeral Home in Exira.

Friends may call at the funeral home, where the family will be present at 6-pm Mon. (9/9).

Burial will be in the Exira Cemetery.

VERAL SORENSEN is survived by:

His wife – Verlee Sorensen, of Exira.

His children – Dale Sorensen, of Bellevue, NE; Randy (Debbie) Sorensen, of Irwin; Laurie (Mike) Uehling, of Columbia, MO; Scott (Michelle) Sorensen, of Centralia, MO, and Kendall Logue, of Ft. Scott, KS.

His brother – Jack (Sally) Sorensen, of Dakota Dunes, IA.

12 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, his sister-in-law, other relatives & friends.

ILAMAE AHRENDSEN, 85, of Audubon, died Sat., Sept. 7th, at the Friendship Home in Audubon. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service for ILAMAE AHRENDSEN will be held 11-am Tue., Sept. 10th, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Audubon. Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon has the arrangements.

A family visitation will be held at the church from 10-am until the time of service, on Tuesday.

Inurnment will be in the Manning Cemetery in Manning, at a later date.

ILAMAE AHRENDSEN is survived by:

Her husband – Edward Ahrendsen, of Audubon.

Her children – Kathy Garber, of Perry, & Bruce (Gloria) Ahrendsen, of Audubon.

Her sisters – Elaine Christensen, of Audubon, & Marjorie Knudsen, of Des Moines.

4 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, her god-daughter, sisters-in-law, other relatives and friends.

Public hearing in Audubon Monday night on the sale of property

The Audubon City Council will hold a public hearing Monday evening at City Hall, with regard to the sale of City-owned property. The hearing, which takes place during the Council’s regular meeting beginning at 7-p.m., pertains to lots located at 414 Pacific Avenue, the west side of South Golden Street, 202 Washington, and 210 West Broadway.

Following the hearing, the Council will act on approving a Resolution authorizing the sale of the aforementioned property. And, Mark Heller and Mike Wede will speak to the Audubon City Council, with regard to a matter pertaining to the car wash.

ALBERT STURM, 89, of Manning, died Sat., Sept. 7th, at home. A Mass of Christian Burial service for ALBERT STURM will be held 10-a.m. Thu., Sept. 12th, at the Sacred Heart Church in Manning. Ohde Funeral Home in Manning has the arrangements.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 3:30-p.m. Wed., Sept. 11th, where a Knights of Columbus Rosary begins at 4-p.m., and a Prayer service is at 7-p.m.  Visitation will resume 9-a.m. Thursday, at the Sacred Heart Church (prior to the service).

Burial is in the Sacred Heart Cemetery.

His wife – Ardith Sturm, of Manning.

His children – Kenneth (Claudia) Sturm, of Mesa, AZ; Robert (Barbara) Sturm, of Halbur; Karen (Carl) Sturm, of Manilla; Donna (Jeffrey) Alfers, of Manning; Randy (Denise) Sturm, of Ankeny; and Russell (Amy) Sturm, of Avoca.

Grant Enfinger wins ARCA race at Iowa

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — Grant Enfinger won the ARCA Racing Series race Saturday night at Iowa Speedway, holding off 16-year-old Kyle Weatherman on the 0.875-mile oval in Newton. Enfinger, driving the Number 90 Ford for BCR Racing, won for the second time in 50 series starts.

Chad Boat was third, followed by Corey LaJoie and Kyle Benjamin. Points leader Frank Kimmel was 10th. He has won three races this season to tie Iggy Katona for the ARCA career victory record with 79.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A new survey of Iowa farmers says renting an acre of land to grow crops costs a state average of $255 an acre. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says that’s an increase of $20 an acre from a year ago and is the highest since the department began compiling comparable records in 2008. Cash rent paid for pasture in Iowa, at $49 per acre, was up $3 from 2012.

MUSCATINE, Iowa (AP) — In a sign of increasing drought, the Farm Service Agency has authorized emergency grazing on land enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program in Muscatine County. The Muscatine Journal reports that the emergency authorization runs until September 30th. Those interested in emergency grazing of Conservation Reserve Program acres must first get approval from the Farm Service Agency.

ATLANTIC, Iowa (AP) — Residents of Atlantic in southwest Iowa might find fall’s hottest color to be hunter orange. The Daily Nonpareil in Council Bluffs reports that the Atlantic City Council passed an ordinance this week allowing deer hunting within city limits. It’s hoped the change will help reduce the exploding deer population within the town’s borders. Hunting packets and applications are available at the Atlantic Police Department.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — David Johnson eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark for the eighth consecutive game and Northern Iowa’s offense was too much for Drake in a 45-14 win on Saturday night. Northern Iowa used 31 first-half points to top Drake in Cedar Falls.
