Thunderstorms could pack large hail & damaging winds today & Friday

The National Weather Service says several rounds of thunderstorms are expected across Iowa today through Friday evening. There is a threat for severe weather over central and western Iowa this afternoon and evening with the potential for large hail and damaging winds. An isolated tornado is also possible.wx103 Additional storms are expected to develop over northern Iowa by Friday afternoon. Large hail, damaging winds and a few tornadoes are possible with this activity. One final line of storms will arrive Friday evening and will bring and additional severe weather threat. Storms will end Saturday as much cooler weather arrives. Sunday will remain cool with a few showers forecast over the northern half of the state. Seasonal and mainly dry conditions are expected for the start of next week.

Assault arrest Wed. night in Red Oak

Police in Red Oak report one person was arrested Wednesday night on an assault charge.   30-year-old Paul Silas Ratley, of Fayetteville, NC, was  arrested in the 1800 block of East Summit Street, on charges of Simple Domestic Assault, and 5th degree criminal mischief.

Ratley was being held without bond at the Montgomery County Law Enforcement Center.

Food waste reduction workshop features regional experts

Lora Kanning, Interpretive Naturalist from the Cass County Conservation and Jim Reimer, Area 6 Representative from the Iowa Waste Exchange will be among the speakers involved in the Food Waste Reduction Workshop on October 15th, at the Council Bluffs Public Library. The workshop will focus on methods to reduce food waste and divert it from the landfill.

Attendees will also hear from Iowa Waste Reduction Center specialists as well as a panel of representatives from area organizations and businesses who will identify the challenges to food waste reduction and diversion. Panelists include representatives from GreenRU, Food Bank for the Heartland, Iowa Western Community College and the Cass County Landfill.

Registration for the one-day workshop is $10, which includes lunch. For more information and to register, visit foodwaste.iwrc.org.

A STATIONARY FRONT WILL BE THE FOCUS FOR THUNDERSTORMS DEVELOPMENT THIS AFTERNOON AS THE ATMOSPHERE BECOME UNSTABLE. THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED TO CONTINUE INTO THE EVENING HOURS. LARGE HAIL AND DAMAGING WIND WILL BE THE PRIMARY HAZARDS.

IVAN FRIZELL, 76, of Greenfield, died Wed., Oct. 2nd, at home. Celebration of Life services for IVAN FRIZELL will be held at a later date. Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield is in charge of the arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to the IVAN FRIZELL Memorial Fund to be established by the family at a later date.

IVAN FRIZELL is survived by:

His wife – Isolde Frizell, of Greenfield.

His daughter – Petra Wallace, of Lenexa, KS.

Texas takes on ISU tonight in Ames

Series record: Texas leads 9-1; Line: Texas by 8 ½

WHAT’S AT STAKE

Texas and coach Mack Brown would be in rough shape if they lost to the Cyclones — who appear to be among the weaker teams in the league — since they already have a pair of defeats on their resume. A win would bring the Cyclones back to .500 and give them a ton of confidence heading into a touch stretch of Big 12 play.

KEY MATCHUP

Iowa State QB Sam Richardson vs. the Longhorns defense. Texas’s defense improved under new defensive coordinator Greg Robinson by allowing just 21 points in a win over Kansas State, and they’ve had nearly an extra week to prepare for the Cyclones. Richardson’s ability as a dual-threat quarterback has been compromised by an ankle injury, but he still had 255 yards passing and 2 TDs last week in a win over Tulsa.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Iowa State: RB Aaron Wimberly. He had 137 yards rushing last week and is now the starter. But he’s never seen a defense like the Longhorns. Texas: WR/RB Daje Johnson. He might the most explosive playmaker Texas has, and he’s expected back after missing the past two games with an ankle injury.

FACTS & FIGURES

Iowa State hasn’t won a Big 12 opener since pounding Kansas 45-3 in 2002…Texas’s win over Kansas State on Sept. 21 snapped a five-game losing streak against the Wildcats…The Longhorns are 4-0 in Ames and beat the Cyclones on the road 37-14 in the 2011 league opener…The Cyclones are one of just three teams nationally that hasn’t lost a fumble.
