OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – Subzero cold and chilling winds have forced many Iowa and Nebraska schools to cancel classes or delay opening by a couple of hours. The National Weather Service says temperatures across Iowa on Thursday morning were as low as minus 12 in Mason City, with a wind chill of minus 37. In Davenport the wind chill was minus 29. In Sioux City the wind chill was minus 26 around 6 a.m. A wind chill of minus 25 was reported for Des Moines.

No serious injuries were reported following a rollover accident near the Cass-Audubon County line early this morning.
According to dispatch reports at 4:10-a.m., a Dodge van carrying five people rolled onto its side off of 710th Street, near the “Tree in the Middle of the Road” landmark, a few miles north of Interstate 80.
Two adults and three children, ages 3, 4 & 5 were outside the van and conscious, but cold. Anita Rescue and a Cass County Sheriff’s deputy responded to the scene. One of the adults and the three children were transported to the Cass County Memorial Hospital for evaluation.
Authorities say the driver of the van was charged with Driving While Revoked, with additional charges pending. The driver’s name has not yet been released.

PEORIA, Ill. (AP) — Walt Lemon, Jr. scored 28 points, shooting 50 percent from the field, to lead Bradley to a 69-65 victory over Northern Iowa on Wednesday night. Auston Barnes had 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Braves (8-12, 3-4 Missouri Valley Conference). Omari Grier added nine points and four rebounds.
Northern Iowa led 32-29 at the half but Lemon came out of the break to score eight points in the first three minutes of the second period to put Bradley up by one. With 30 seconds left to play, Lemon hit a jumper and sank 2 of 2 from the line to help give the Braves the edge they needed to win.
Seth Tuttle scored 20 points with seven rebounds for the Panthers (10-9, 4-3) who hit just 36.7 percent from the field overall.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A Senate panel is giving preliminary backing to a bill that would exempt military pensions from the state income tax. A Senate subcommittee approved the legislation during a brief hearing yesterday. The military pension exemption is a top priority for Republican Governor Terry Branstad, who has made support for veterans a key part of his budget plan this year.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Former residents and employees of the Iowa Juvenile Home testified before a legislative panel and urged lawmakers to support a measure that would force officials to reopen the facility that closed last week. Those testifying Wednesday before the Senate Human Resources Committee told lawmakers they tried to create a safe environment for teens at the Toledo, Iowa home which closed January 15th.
AMES, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa Board of Regents is appealing a district court’s decision to reinstate Iowa State basketball player Bubu Palo to the team. The Des Moines Register reports the Iowa Attorney General’s Office filed a motion yesterday on behalf of the board that seeks an immediate stay of a Webster County district judge’s recent order to let Palo rejoin the team.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Nik Stauskas scored 26 points, and Number 21 Michigan held off 10th ranked Iowa 75-67 last night to remain unbeaten in the Big Ten. Aaron White scored 14 of Iowa’s points in a row down the stretch, but it wasn’t enough to rally the Hawkeyes from an 11-point deficit.
Authorities in Montgomery County report three arrests on Wednesday. The Sheriff’s Department says Connie Williams, of Villisca, was arrested at around 10:20-a.m. on a Montgomery County warrant for Theft in the 5th Degree. And, at around 12:30-p.m., Zach Holland, of Red Oak, was arrested on a warrant out of Red Oak, for Theft in the 5th Degree and Trespass. Both subjects were transported to the Montgomery County Jail and held on $300 bond, each.
And the Red Oak Police Department reports the arrest at around 2:40-p.m., of 58-year old Kevin Kay Fish, of Red Oak. Fish was arrested on a Red Oak P-D warrant for Domestic Abuse Assault and was being held in the Montgomery County Jail on $300 bond.
NEW YORK (AP) – St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Andrew Pierce has been suspended for 50 games following a positive test for an amphetamine under baseball’s minor league drug program. The suspension, announced Wednesday by the commissioner’s office, will begin with the start of the New York-Penn League season this summer.
A right-hander who turns 23 on Sunday, Pierce was taken by St. Louis out of Southern Mississippi in the eighth round of last June’s amateur draft. He went 2-2 with a 2.11 ERA in seven starts and five relief appearances last year for the State College Spikes of the Class A NYP League.
There have been nine suspensions this year under the minor league program.
