Glenwood Police investigate shooting near elementary school

Police in Glenwood are investigating a shooting incident which occurred near an elementary school Friday afternoon. According to the Daily NonPareil, Douglas Trent Good, of Glenwood man was taken to the hospital  after a unknown person accidentally discharged a firearm into his leg while sitting in a car waiting to pick up children at West Elementary in Glenwood. A report on Good’s condition was not immediately available. No other injuries were reported. KETV says Douglas Trent Good told emergency operators he shot himself in the leg, while waiting in the playground pick-up area.

Superintendent Devin Embray of the Glenwood Community School District said the incident happened about 3:30 p.m. in the lower playground parking lot. Police were trying to determine why Good had a .9-mm handgun on school property, and the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Iowa supporters encourage Clinton to run in 2016

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Hillary Rodham Clinton hasn’t announced if she will run for president in 2016, but her supporters in the early voting state of Iowa are getting organized anyway. Top Iowa Democrats are set to gather in Des Moines today (Saturday) for an event aimed at building support for a potential Clinton White House bid. Craig Smith, the national chairman of the Ready for Hillary group, is scheduled to address the gathering.

Hosts of the event include the state chairs for Clinton’s 2008 campaign and President Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign. Ready for Hillary is a so-called super PAC building a national network to benefit Clinton should she decide to seek the presidency in 2016. The former secretary of state and 2008 presidential candidate hasn’t disclosed her plans.

JOHNSTON, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa National Guard is closing an armory in the southern Iowa city of Centerville. The Guard announced in a news release last night that officials had decided to immediately close the armory after studying its force and infrastructure needs. The 21,000 Centerville armory was built in 1992.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Authorities are piecing together what happened at a northeast Iowa house where five bodies have been recovered after a fire. The fire in Arlington early yesterday left just a charred pile of smoking metal and siding. Ron Humphrey with the fire marshal’s office says autopsies will determine if any foul play was involved. Arlington is in Fayette County, about 125 miles northeast of Des Moines.

SULLY, Iowa (AP) — Officials have released the name of an Iowa inmate who died while working at a truck wash business. Department of Corrections spokesman Fred Scaletta says 26-year-old Willie Mercer was pronounced dead Tuesday at Sully Truck Wash in Sully. Officials have not determined his cause of death. Two other employees were found unconscious near Mercer inside a tank trailer. They remain hospitalized.

ROSEVILLE, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota and Iowa state lotteries have unveiled a new two-state game in which players win by matching all of the numbers — or none of them. All or Nothing players will choose 12 numbers from a pool of 24. A $1 ticket gives players a shot at a top prize of $100,000.

NE. man sentenced to 64 Months in Prison for escape from Bluffs facility

The U-S Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa reports a Nebraska man was sentenced Friday to almost 2 1/2-years in prison for escape from a residential care facility in Council Bluffs. 53-year old Michael E. Hannum, of Omaha, was sentenced by United States District Court Senior Judge Robert Pratt to 30 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release for escape.

On November 1st, 2013, Hannum pled guilty to escaping on August 2nd, 2013, from CH Inc. the residential re-entry center in Council Bluffs. On August 4th, 2013, Hannum was arrested by officers with the Council Bluffs Police.

The investigation was conducted by the Council Bluffs Police Department and the United States Marshal Service, and the case was prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa.

NE woman gets more than 5-years in prison for distributing meth at a Council Bluffs casino

A Nebraska woman was sentenced Friday in Council Bluffs U-S District Court, for her role in the distribution of methaphetamine in a Bluffs casino. 43-year old Dawn R. Hightree, of Fremont, NE, was sentenced to 64 months in prison followed by six years of supervised release for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine.

On May 22, 2013, Hightree pled guilty to the charge which was the result of an investigation conducted into methamphetamine distribution at Harrah’s Cas ino in Council Bluffs. Hightree was found to have methamphetamine and drug trafficking paraphernalia in the hotel room at Harrah’s Casino where she was staying.

The investigation was conducted by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Special Enforcement Operations Bureau, the Council Bluffs, Iowa, Police Department and the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement. The case was prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa.

5 bodies found at Iowa home fire

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Authorities in northeast Iowa say the bodies of five people have been retrieved from a house that was completely destroyed by an early morning fire. The house was damaged so badly it could be difficult to collect enough evidence to determine the cause of the fire. The blaze left just a charred pile of smoking metal and siding where the house once stood in Arlington, a small city about 125 miles northeast of Des Moines.

The state fire marshal says it appears the bodies are those of three adults and two children. Their remains will be sent to the state medical examiner’s office for positive identification. An official cause of death for the five will not be available until autopsies are completed.

LEON COOPER, 87, of Greenfield (& formerly of the Fontanelle area), died Fri., Jan. 24th, at the Community Care Center in Stuart. Funeral services for LEON COOPER will be held 10-a.m. Tue., Jan. 28th, at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Fontanelle.  Steen Funeral Home in Fontanelle has the arrangements.

Visitation will be held from 5-to 8-pm Monday (1/27) at the funeral home, with the family present. Online condolences may be left to the family at www.steenfunerals.com. Memorials may be directed to the Leon Cooper Memorial Funds to be established at a later date.

Burial will full military graveside rites by the Fontanelle American Legion Carlson Post No. 247, will be held in the Canby Cemetery with a luncheon to follow.

His wife  – Sylvia Cooper, of Greenfield.

His children – Becky (John) Ingram, of AZ; Ralph (Penny) Cooper, of Adair; Ivan (Lori) Cooper, of MO.,  & Bonny (Dan) Readinger, of Guthrie Center.

13 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
