NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Bob Stoops matched Barry Switzer’s record for most coaching victories at Oklahoma when the 22nd-ranked Sooners cruised to a 48-10 victory over Iowa State on Saturday. Trevor Knight led the way as Stoops recorded win No. 157 with Oklahoma (8-2, 5-2 Big 12), which closed the game with 45 unanswered points over the final three quarters. The backup quarterback was 8-of-14 passing for 61 yards and rushed for 123 yards and one touchdown.

Iowa State (1-9, 0-7) held Oklahoma scoreless in the first quarter and led 10-3 before Jalen Saunders returned a punt 91 yards for a touchdown right before halftime. Damien Williams added 10 carries for 128 yards and two touchdowns for the Sooners.

Knight provided an instant spark after replacing injured starter Blake Bell in the opening minutes of the second quarter. Bell was 2 of 5 for 10 yards.

Iowa site picked for archaeological center

GLENWOOD, Iowa (AP) — A location in western Iowa for the proposed Loess Hills Archaeological Interpretive Center has been approved by the Iowa Preserves Advisory Board. The Council Bluffs Daily Nonpareil reports that the location is on a state preserve at the south edge of Glenwood, just across the Missouri River from Nebraska.

The multimillion-dollar center will be devoted to studying the Native Americans who lived in earthen dwellings in extreme western Iowa and eastern Nebraska between 600 and 750 years ago. The 906-acre preserve, Iowa’s largest, was previously a part of the state-operated Glenwood Resource Center.

Its re-designation as a preserve was hastened by the evidence that beneath its surface are dozens of ancient earth lodges, camping areas and agricultural pursuits.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — David Johnson was the workhorse for Northern Iowa, carrying the ball 37 times and scoring twice in a victory over Missouri State 17-10 on Saturday. Johnson gained 167 of the Panthers’ 212 yards rushing, and had TD runs of 1 and 21 yards in the close contest. Northern Iowa (6-5, 2-5 Missouri Valley Conference) ended the Bears (5-7, 5-3) four-game win streak. Missouri State has not defeated Northern Iowa since 2005.

Five turnovers — three fumbles and two interceptions — hurt Missouri State, which had jumped ahead 3-0 on an Austin Witmer 37-yard-field goal on the opening drive. Successive possessions ended with six punts, three fumbles, an interception and two missed field goals but the Bears were still only down 17-10 after scoring on a Ryan Heaston 8-yard run with 4:57 to play.

After forcing a Panthers punt, however, Missouri State’s Ashton Glaser was intercepted a second time.
