Burn ban rescinded for Audubon County

The State Fire Marshal’s Office has rescinded a ban on outdoor burning in Audubon County. The ban, which went into effect On August 31st due to the dry condition, was lifted effective 1-p.m. today (Friday).

Parking mishap causes damage to 5 cars in Atlantic

An attempt to park a vehicle in the Atlantic Medical Center parking lot Thursday morning resulted in a total of $8,600 damage to five vehicles, but no one was injured. According to the Atlantic Police Department, Rachel Jensen, of Brayton, was attempting to park her vehicle, and was backing up to get between the yellow lines of her parking stall, when she a vehicle driven by Larry Brown of Atlantic, traveling through the parking lot.

After Jensen’s car hit Brown’s, she proceeded to pull forward, and in the process hit a parked vehicle registered to Micheal Spetman, of Council Bluffs. The collision pushed Spetman’s vehicle into another parked car, registered to Gary Claussen, of Walnut. That vehicle was then shoved into a parked car registered to Alan Arp, of Atlantic.

The accident happened just before 10-a.m., Thursday. Officials say Jensen was cited for Failure to Maintain Control.

MARLIS BORNHOLDT, 75, of Atlantic, died Thu., Nov. 14th, at the Heritage House, in Atlantic. Funeral services for MARLIS BORNHOLDT will be held 10:30-a.m. Mon., Nov. 18th, at the Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home in Atlantic.

Visitation with the family present, will be from 2-to 4-pm Sun., Nov. 17th, at the funeral home.

Burial will be in the Brighton Township Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to the Heritage House Good Samaritan Fund.

MARLIS BORNHOLDT is survived by:

Her husband – Donald Bornholdt, of Atlantic.

Her children – Renee (Mike) Juza, of Spencer; Dwayne (Janelle) Bornholdt, of Atlantic; Rhonda (Rob) Maidhof, of CO; and LaVon (Mick) Sager, of Atlantic.

Her sister – Verdelle (Jerry) Templeman, of Atlantic.

12 grandchildren & 5 great-grandchildren.

Ferentz contributing $500,000 to UI campaign

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz is contributing $500,000 to the Iowa Football Legacy Campaign, which is financing new football facilities.  The University of Iowa Foundation announced the donation Friday by Kirk and Mary Ferentz, noting it’s part of $34 million raised for the campaign, which is $1 million from its goal.  The University of Iowa Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is providing the remainder of the $55 million campaign.

The campaign is financing an already-completed indoor practice facility and a 76,000-square-foot Football Operations Center, expected to be completed in summer 2014. The operations center includes a strength training area, meeting rooms, locker room, offices and exhibit space.

Kirk and Mary Ferentz have donated repeatedly to the university, including gifts to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and to medical research.

Audubon County Community Foundation grants awarded

The Chair of the Audubon County Community Foundation has announced that $34,900 in grants have been awarded to four non-profit agencies in the County. According to ACCF Chair Brett Irlmeier, the following each received checks for $8,725 : the Audubon County Agricultural Society received a grant for the Agri Hall air conditioning project; The Audubon County Recreation Foundation also received a check for the construction of a recreation center; A grant was awarded to the Exira Park Committee/City of Exira, for an LED programmable sign, and the Friendship Home Foundation received a grant for their new, Memory Care Unit.

Each of those nonprofit organizations had submitted applications to the Audubon County Community Foundation by the September 1st deadline. Of the $34,900 award total, $2,000 from the Leon and Iva Milliman Endowed Fund was provided to the Exira Park Committee.  The Audubon County Agricultural Society was awarded $2,600 from the Charles T. and Kathleen K. Manatt Endowed Fund, $600 from the Audubon State Bank/Stephen Garst Endowed Fund, $1,000 from the Audubon Masonic Association Endowed Fund, $450 from the Fred and Evelyn Nissen Endowed Fund for Audubon, and $450 from the Merle and Norma Petersen Endowed Fund.

All grantees met the criteria as Audubon County nonprofit agencies or organizations with charitable missions in the areas of civic, cultural, health, education and social services.  Only organizations providing services in Audubon County were eligible. Audubon County agency representatives received their checks on November 11th.

Exira man arrested on assault charge

The Audubon County Sheriff’s Department reports an Exira man was arrested Thursday afternoon. 25-year old Brock Daniel Knapp was taken into custody on a charge of Domestic Abuse Assault, following an investigation into an incident that allegedly occurred at his home in Exira, early Thursday morning. Knapp was being held without bond in the Audubon County Jail, pending an appearance before a magistrate.
