SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — Health officials say 95 cases of a contagious bacterial infection that causes diarrhea have been reported in northwest Iowa’s Woodbury County. The Siouxland District Health Department’s deputy director Tyler Brock tells the Sioux City Journal that the majority of those sick are children, but a number of adults have contracted shigellosis, too.

Most people who are infected with Shigella have frequent watery stools that could be bloody, as well as fever and stomach cramps, starting a day or two after exposure to the bacteria. Symptoms usually last several days. Woodbury County recorded a single case of shigellosis last year.

But on Friday, 95 cases had been reported. About 20 of those had been diagnosed in early November.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Jake Rudock threw for 239 yards and a pair of touchdown passes and Iowa rallied from 14 down to beat Michigan 24-21 Saturday. A fumble recovery by Anthony Hitchens with 2:12 left sealed it for the Hawkeyes (7-4, 4-3 Big Ten), who also clinched a winning season after going 4-8 in 2012.

Michigan used a pair of Rudock interceptions to race out to a 21-7 halftime lead. But the Hawkeyes held the Wolverines (7-4, 3-4) to just 45 yards in the second half and jumped ahead on a 34-yard field goal by Mike Meyer with 6:02 left.

Devin Gardner drove Michigan to Iowa’s 31 before he was stripped by Hitchens. He finished with 98 yards passing and two TDs.

The Daily NonPareil, citing a blog by Movoto Real Estate, of San Mateo, Calif., says Council Bluffs came in 31st place, and it was joined by other adjoining cities to Omaha. Each city was ranked by low cost of living, which factored costs for houses, food, utilities and property and state income taxes.

Mayor Tom Hanafan said the showing was indicative of a bolstering metro area. Council Bluffs – the only Iowa city listed – fell 10 spots behind Bellevue, Neb., which was tied at 21st with La Vergne, Tenn. Papillion, Neb., ranked 33rd.

Midwest City, Oklahoma, was ranked first because it had the lowest overall cost of living. Food and utilities costs also were lower than average. The median price for a house was $76,600 while the median household income was $44,396. Property taxes were 24 percent below the national average while sales and state income taxes were 56 and 17 percent above average.

The realtor blog surveyed 139 cities, which comprised suburbs and other communities near the 50 largest cities in the United States.
