Iowa gets another crack at Michigan

Sports

November 22nd, 2013 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The lowest point of Iowa’s disastrous 2012 season came at Michigan, where the Wolverines handed the Hawkeyes their biggest loss in five years. Iowa gets another shot at Michigan on Saturday and a chance to show the rest of the Big Ten how far it’s come. The Hawkeyes (6-4, 3-3 Big Ten) can clinch at least a .500 record in league play and improve their bowl status if they beat Michigan for a third straight time in Iowa City.

Michigan (7-3, 3-3) needed a late field goal and three overtimes to beat Northwestern 27-19 last week. The Wolverines rank next to last in the Big Ten in rushing offense and just seventh in scoring defense. Michigan quarterback Devin Gardner had six touchdowns in a 42-17 blowout of Iowa last season.

Regina blanks St. Edmond 35-0

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Iowa City Regina now stands alone among Iowa high school football programs. Drew Cook completed all 13 of his passes and Regina ran its winning streak to a state-record 56 games in beating Fort Dodge St. Edmond 35-0 Friday to capture the Class 1A state championship.

It was the fourth consecutive title for the top-ranked Regals, who had been tied with the great Waterloo East teams of the late 1960s with 55 straight wins. East compiled its streak from 1965-71, before the state had postseason playoffs.

St. Edmond (13-1) brought the stingiest defense in 1A, giving up only 7 points a game. But the fourth-ranked Gaels were no match for the highly skilled Regals (14-0), who joined Solon as the only schools with four straight championships.

Iowa State seeks 1st Big 12 win against Kansas

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Losing seasons and a chilly forecast have dampened the excitement for Saturday night’s game between Kansas and host Iowa State. For the Jayhawks and Cyclones, there’s actually quite a bit to play for.

It would be huge for the rebuilding efforts of coach Charlie Weis if the Jayhawks (3-7, 1-6 Big 12) can string together back-to-back Big 12 wins for the first time since 2008. It will be senior day for Iowa State (1-9, 0-7), and one last chance for a banged-up team to show that its home fans that they weren’t as bad as their record indicates.

The Cyclones have won three straight in the series, but they’re also on a seven-game losing skid.

Iowa officials: Health patient choked on food

News

November 22nd, 2013 by Ric Hanson

CLARINDA, Iowa (AP) – Iowa officials say they’ve revised meal distribution policies at a state mental health institute after a patient fatally choked on food he shouldn’t have been served. The state Department of Human Services says food service procedures at Clarinda Mental Health Institute were not followed when a patient in the geriatric psychiatry program was given a peanut butter sandwich on Sept. 1 instead of pureed food. He was later found unresponsive and slumped over a dining table.

Officials say they began an internal investigation and at least one employee has been fired. DHS Director Charles M. Palmer says the incident was isolated. The Department of Inspections and Appeals surveyed the facility in early November. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services also issued a civil penalty of more than $8,000.

WR Kyle Williams goes on Chiefs’ IR

Sports

November 22nd, 2013 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Wide receiver Kyle Williams has been placed on injured reserve by Kansas City with a torn knee ligament.  Williams tweeted about the injury Friday morning just after the team announced it signed receiver Chad Hall to the 53-man roster and placed Williams on IR. Williams played in 39 games with nine starts in more than three NFL seasons with San Francisco and Kansas City. His only appearance for the Chiefs came in last week’s loss to Denver.

It is the second time he has been sidelined with a torn ACL. Hall has played in 22 games in just over two NFL seasons with the Chiefs and Eagles. He was claimed off waivers on Sept. 1 from the 49ers and played in seven games with Kansas City, making one catch for 9 yards. Hall also returns kicks.

Iowa governor adjusts job creation claims

News

November 22nd, 2013 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Gov. Terry Branstad is downsizing his recent claims of job creation in the state.  Branstad – who pledged to create 200,000 new jobs in five years during his 2010 campaign – recently claimed he has added more than 160,000 jobs since taking office.  His administration now says the actual figure was 128,000 following new federal jobs data out Friday.

Branstad spokesman Tim Albrecht said via email that the change was simply due to calculations with revised data and the governor never sought to mislead Iowans.  The new figure has still drawn criticism because it counts only jobs added in Iowa, not jobs lost. Bureau of Labor Statistics data released Friday shows the state has added 48,200 net jobs since Branstad took office.

Harlan man wins $10k in Powerball drawing

News

November 22nd, 2013 by Ric Hanson

A Harlan man won a good chunk of change from the Iowa Lottery Powerball drawing last month.  The Iowa Lottery says Wesley Clay checked his Powerball tickets from drawings held in October and discovered he won $10,000. Clay’s winning Powerball ticket was from the October 31st drawing. He told the lottery he normally throws the tickets in his car and then checks them all randomly.

Clay matched four white balls and the Powerball from the October 31st drawing to win the prize of $10,000. His ticket was purchased at the Taylor Quik-Pik on 23rd Street in Harlan. He claimed his prize Monday at the Iowa Lottery’s regional office in Council Bluffs. Clay and his wife Brianne say their lottery winnings will be put into a college fund for their children.

The estimated jackpot for this Saturday’s Powerball is $50 million.
