Chiefs revolving O-line finally hits stride

Sports

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Branden Albert is hurt, so is Jon Asamoah, and the No. 1 overall pick in last April’s draft has gone through a painful series of growing pains this season. It’s been a tough time to be a member of the Kansas City Chiefs offensive line.

Yet despite all the shuffling caused by a spate of injuries, the front five has played perhaps its best football of the season the last three weeks, which just so happen to have coincided with the offense’s best performances of the season — and a frustrating three-game losing streak.

Offensive guard Jeff Allen said the line is simply getting comfortable with coach Andy Reid’s offense. Finally, after 12 weeks of regular-season games.

News

December 5th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – A northwest Iowa day care provider has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of a 3-year-old girl she was watching in late October.  Sioux County Attorney Coleman McAllister says Rochelle Sapp has been arrested after test results confirmed the girl, Autumn Elgersma, died of blunt force trauma.

Sapp was initially charged with willful injury and child endangerment but on Oct. 31 when Autumn died McAllister dropped the charges. He says it was important to wait for a ruling on the cause of death and other tests.  He says Sapp was arrested Thursday. Her case is not yet listed in court records and it’s unclear if she has an attorney.

Sapp initially reported Autumn had fallen but later said she threw her to the floor after becoming angry.

Boehner floats farm bill extension

Ag/Outdoor

December 5th, 2013 by Ric Hanson

WASHINGTON (AP) – House Speaker John Boehner says the farm bill should be extended through January while negotiators work out differences on cuts to food stamps and how to restructure farm subsidies. Negotiators are working against a New Year’s deadline for expiration of some dairy subsidies. If those subsidies expire, new laws will kick in that could result in higher prices for a gallon of milk.

Boehner said Thursday he hasn’t “seen any real progress” on the farm bill. That’s in contrast to comments from House Agriculture Committee Chairman Frank Lucas of Oklahoma, who said Wednesday that negotiators have made “great progress.”

Cuts to the $80 billion-a-year food stamp program are a major sticking point in talks.
