Tuttle, Northern Iowa beat Missouri St. 60-58

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — Seth Tuttle scored 21 points and hit a go-ahead layup with 2 seconds left to lift Northern Iowa over Missouri State 60-58 on Saturday night. Tuttle was the only Panther to score in double digits after shooting 75 percent (9 of 12) from the floor, and led with a team-high nine rebounds.

Missouri State (17-9, 7-7 Missouri Valley Conference) trailed all the way through, but climbed back to tie up the score after a 7-0 run capped by two Jarmar Gulley free throws with 38 seconds to go. The Bears had closed in on a seven-point deficit after Austin Ruder sank two free throws and Dorrian Williams hit a 3-pointer.

Northern Iowa (13-13, 7-7) combined to commit just nine turnovers in the game, and finished with five steals. Ruder finished with 15 points and Gulley added 14 to lead the Bears in Springfield, Missouri.

Drake holds off Loyola of Chicago in 70-62 win

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Richard Carter scored 20 points to lead Drake to a 70-62 win over Loyola of Chicago on Saturday night. Drake (13-13, 4-10 Missouri Valley) led most of the game, extending its lead to 16 on a 3-pointer by Jordan Daniels that made it 52-36 with 11:22 remaining but had to thwart a Loyola rally in the final minutes. The Ramblers (9-17, 4-10) drew to within striking distance on a Milton Doyle layup that made it 65-62 with 27 seconds left but couldn’t score again as the Bulldogs put the game away at the free-throw line.

Daniels finished with 12 points and Seth VanDeest had 12 rebounds for the Bulldogs, who shot 51 percent from the field to snap a four-game losing streak. Loyola outscored Drake 40-36 in the second half and was led by Doyle, who had 16 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.

Powerball estimated jackpot surges to $400M

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Lottery officials say there was no jackpot winner in Saturday’s Powerball drawing, adding the current estimated jackpot has jumped to $400 million or $227.8 million in cash value. Powerball said the next drawing will be Wednesday, Feb. 19. It added in a statement that the previous estimated jackpot total was an annuitized $330.8 million, or $188.4 million as a cash option.

Powerball is played in 43 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The odds of matching all six numbers in the game are 1 in about 175 million, according to statistics of the nonprofit Multi-State Lottery Association whose members offer one or more of the association’s games.

Fremont County Weekend Arrests

The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office reports a number of arrests over the weekend.

On Friday (2/14) at approximately 11:20pm deputies conducted a traffic stop on a 1996 Mercury Villager for a broken taillight near the intersection of 190th street and 355th Avenue in Fremont County.  The driver, 34-year-old Craig Duane Ellis of Council Bluffs was found to have a warrant for his arrest for Possession of a Deadly Weapon by a Prohibited Person and Possession of a Controlled Substance out of Nebraska.

Ellis was placed under arrest and a search of the vehicle produced a loaded firearm as well as several controlled substances.  Ellis was arrested on numerous charges and is being held on $131,548.00 cash only bond and his Nebraska warrants.  A passenger in the vehicle, 50-year-old Kelli Rachelle Gould of Shenandoah was also placed under arrests on numerous charges including possession of Methamphetamine and Marijuana.  Gould is being held on $125,300 cash only bond and more charges are pending in the case.

On Saturday (2/15) Sheriff’s deputies were called to County Line Bar in Shenandoah for a report of a fight in progress.  Upon arrival 26-year-old Charles Franklin Liles of Shenandoah was arrested for Public Intoxication and was later released on $300 bond.

Also on Saturday (2/15) Fremont County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a domestic disturbance at 402 Clay Street in Sidney at approximately 1:13am.  Sheriff’s officials along with Sidney Police responded to the scene.  36-year-old Melvin Benny Jurey of Sidney was arrested for Felony Assault and Domestic Abuse Assault and later received a Contempt of Court charge.  Jurey is being held on no bond.

Finally on Saturday (2/15) Fremont County Sheriff’s Officials received a report of a hit and run accident at 1406 Main Street in Hamburg that had occurred sometime in the evening hours Friday (2/14) or early morning Saturday.  An investigation was made of the scene and Sheriff’s Officials later made contact with the driver of the vehicle that left the scene 21-year-old Dalton Haler of Hamburg.  The investigation is ongoing and charges are pending.

Public Intoxication Arrest in Villisca

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office reports the arrest of a Villisca man early Sunday (2/16) morning on a public intoxication charge.  Officers arrested 34-year-old Dean Richard Orr of Villisca following an incident in the 400 block of S 3rd Avenue in Villisca.  Orr was taken to the Montgomery County Jail and held on $300 bond.

RUTH WEDEMEYER POWELL, 83, of Adair, died Fri., Feb. 14th, at the Guthrie County Hospital. Funeral services for RUTH POWELL will be held 10-a.m. Mon., Feb. 17th, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Guthrie Center. Twigg Funeral Home in Guthrie Center has the arrangements.

Visitation will be held from 4-to 7-pm Sunday, Feb. 16th at the funeral home.

Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery at Adair.

HELEN MARY LANGENFELD, 94, of Harlan, died Fri. Feb. 14th, at the Elm Crest Retirement Community. A Mass of Christian Burial services for HELEN LANGENFELD will be held 11-a.m. Tue., Feb. 18th, at the St. Boniface Catholic Church in Westphalia. Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Harlan has the arrangements.

Visitation at the funeral home is from 4-to 9-pm on Mon., Feb. 17th, with a Rosary at 7-pm Monday.

Burial will be in the St. Boniface Cemetery.
