MPEDC seeks award nominees

Officials with the Midwest Partnership Economic Development Corporation say they are currently accepting nominations for the Guy Powell Award- recognizing excellence in leadership and passion for economic development in the Midwest Partnership Development region. The MPEDC serves Adair, Audubon, Greene and Guthrie Counties.

Guy Powell, past president of the Midwest Partnership Development Corporation and active volunteer on the board of many other area organizations, was passionate about local and regional economic development. He was a strong believer in the region’s potential. In recognition of his life-long dedication, commitment, and service, the Midwest Partnership Development Corporation has created the Guy Powell Award.

Businesses and individuals who are members in Midwest Partnership Development Corporation are encouraged to nominate individuals who stand out as outstanding leaders in this area of west central Iowa, and who work to make it a more economically vital place to live, work, and play.

Mills County accident

The Mills County Sheriff’s Office reports one person was transported to the hospital following an accident Saturday two-miles northeast of Henderson. Authorities say a 2012 Kia driven by Jamie Sayers, of Malvern, was traveling south on Highway 59 when Sayers’ car was hit by a 2010 GMC driven by Robert Larimer, of Bedford. The accident happened when Larimer failed to yield from a stop sign as he was traveling west on Brothers Avenue. Following the collision, the Kia entered the west ditch. Sayers was taken to the Red Oak Hospital by Macedonia Rescue.

Other reports to the media indicate: 4-inches in Shenandoah, Hamburg & Clarinda; 2.75-inches near Avoca.

ISU’s Hogue Named Big 12 Player of the Week

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State junior Dustin Hogue has been named Phillips 66 Big 12 Player of the Week after averaging 19.5 points and 15.0 rebounds in the Cyclones’ wins against Auburn and UNI.

Hogue, a forward from Yonkers, N.Y., started the week with career-highs of 22 points and 16 boards against the Tigers, recording the Big 12’s first 20-point, 15-rebound performance this season. He then followed with a 17-point, 14-rebound effort against UNI for his third double-double of the season.

On the week, Hogue shot 70.6 percent (12-of-17) from the field, while making 3-of-6 (.500) from 3-point range and 12-of-18 (.667) from the free-throw line.

Hogue is the third different Cyclone to earn Big 12 Player of the Week honors this season. It is the fifth overall award for an Iowa Stater.

Hogue and the Cyclones return to action Friday against Iowa. Tipoff is slated for 8:30 p.m.

THE COLD WIND CHILLS WILL CONTINUE THROUGH THE NOON HOUR TODAY AND THEN MODERATE TO 10 TO 15 BELOW BY THE NOON HOUR ACROSS THE AREA AND SLOWLY IMPROVE THROUGHOUT THE AFTERNOON AS TEMPERATURES RISE.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) – Retired managers Joe Torre, Tony La Russa and Bobby Cox have been unanimously elected to the baseball Hall of Fame by the expansion era committee.  Each of the inductees won more than 2,000 games in managerial careers that spanned more than four decades. Torre became the fifth manager to win at least four World Series titles. La Russa won championships with Oakland and St. Louis. Cox led Atlanta to one championship and 14 straight division titles.

The announcement was made Monday at the winter meetings. They will be inducted July 27 in Cooperstown, N.Y., along with any players chosen by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine, 300-game winners, are among the newcomers to the writers’ ballot, with results announced Jan. 8.
