Audubon School Board set to meet Monday evening (June 19)

(Audubon, Iowa) – Members of the Audubon School District’s Board of Education will meet Monday (June 19), in the Elementary School Work Room. Their meetings begins at 7-p.m. with a Board Work Session on various Policy Revisions, followed by the regular monthly meeting, during which they will act on approving the following matters:

  • RSAI Membership (Rural School Advocates of Iowa)
  • ISFIS Membership (Iowa School Finance Information Services)
  • EMC Insurance quotes
  • Change Orders
  • And an agreement with Apptegy (School marketing & Communications)

The Audubon School Board will then enter into a Closed Session “To discuss whether to conduct a hearing, or conduct a hearing for suspension or expulsion of a student, unless an open meeting is requested by the student or the parent of the student.” Afterward, the Board will re-enter an open session to possibly take action on the expulsion of a student. And, they will act separately, on Personnel matters (Resignations, Contracts, etc.)

In his report to the Board, Superintendent Eric Trager is expected to provide a Building Project – and Building Project Budget – Update, along with an update on the Track and Greenhouse, and the City Recreational Ball Field.

Union County Sheriff’s Dept. issues a (Delayed) accident report

(Creston, Iowa) – The Union County Sheriff’s Office, Saturday (June 17) issued a report on an injury accident that occurred on June 10th. Authorities say a 1995 Dodge RAM pickup driven by 82-year-old Nancy Lee Goodwin, of Valrico, FL., was traveling north on Redwood Avenue in Union County. A 1999 Ford Taurus driven by 61-year-old Raymond Eugene Blubaugh, of Lineville, was traveling east on 170th Street. He came to a stop at the posted intersection, looked, but didn’t see Goodwin’s pickup approaching.

When Blubaugh pulled away from the stop sign to cross the intersection, the pickup struck his car on the passenger side. Both vehicles came to rest in the northeast corner of the intersection. The crash happened at around 1:50-p.m.

Both drivers were wearing their seat belts. Each complained of pain and possible injury. Nancy Goodwin was transported by Medic 1 EMS to the hospital in Creston. Blubaugh was not taken to the hospital. He was cited for Failure to have a valid driver’s license. Both vehicles were totaled, with damages amounting to $7,500.

Vehicle fire near Afton, Saturday evening

(Afton, Iowa) – Sheriff’s officials in Union County say no injuries were reported after a vehicle caught fire on old Highway 34 east of Creston, Saturday. Authorities say 19-year-old Max S. Johns, of Creston, was traveling to Creston from Afton at around 5:14-p.m., Saturday, when he noticed a lot of smoke coming from the passenger side of the 2008 Nissan Altima he was driving.

Johns pulled over. When he noticed fluid dripping from the car, and a small flame, he stepped back, and called 911. Damage to the car was estimated at $6,000.

DORTHEA ELLEN PETERSEN, 95, of Omaha, died Friday, June 16, 2023, at The Lighthouse nursing home, in Omaha. Funeral services for DORTHEA PETERSEN will be held 11-a.m. Tuesday, June 20, 2023, at the Peace United Church of Christ, in Walnut. Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Avoca has the arrangements.

The family will greet friends at the Peace United Church of Christ in Walnut, on Tuesday, from 9:30-until 11-a.m.

Burial is in the Layton Township Cemetery in Walnut.

DORTHEA PETERSEN is survived by:

Her daughters – Debra Welk, of Omaha, and Patricia (David) Robertson, of Victor, ID.

Her son – Brian (Deborah) Petersen, of Council Bluffs.

5 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

AHSTW School District statement on swimming pool incident

(Avoca, Iowa) – Officials with the AHSTW School District, Saturday, released a statement with regard to an incident that involving a five-year-old child, that took place late Friday afternoon at the swimming pool in Avoca. Disptach reports at the time indicating the incident was related to a near drowning, and that CPR was in progress.
The District said “On Friday afternoon there was an emergency at the Avoca Swimming Pool involving an AHSTW TK student. Currently, the student is receiving medical care at the hospital. At this time, AHSTW Community School District will be providing support and counseling to anyone [child or adult] who may have witnessed or been affected by this event.
AHSTW Community School District, AEA Counselors, and community support groups will be available at the Viking Excel / AEA Building on Monday, June 19, 2023 and Tuesday, June 20, 2023 between the hours of 3 PM and 7 PM to meet with anyone who would like to visit.We ask that you please park in the lower parking lot between the hours of 3 PM and 5 PM.

Saturday’s High in Atlantic was 87. The Low was 60. We received .43″ rain Saturday, at the KJAN Studios. Last year on this date, the High in Atlantic was 92, and the Low was 70. The Record High for June 18th in Atlantic, was 98 in 1910. The Record Low was 46, in 1974 & 2000.

DENNIS EDWARDS, 72, of Orient, died Friday, June 16, 2023, at the Adair County Memorial Hospital in Greenfield. A Celebration of Life service for DENNIS EDWARDS will be held 2-p.m. Tuesday, June 20, 2023, at the United Methodist Church in Macksburg.  A luncheon will immediately follow the service.  Lamb Funeral Home in Greenfield is in charge of the professional arrangements.

Visitation with the family is from 1-until 2-p.m. Tuesday,  at the United Methodist Church in Macksburg.

Memorials: May be directed to the Orient-Macksburg Community Schools.

Red Oak mans arrested for Public Intoxication

The Red Oak Police Department reports the arrest of 25-year-old Cade Adrian McWilliams of Red Oak early Saturday morning on a charge of Public Intoxication 1st Offense. McWilliams was arrested at 12:28 a.m. in the 2700 Block of North 8th Street in Red Oak. McWilliams was taken to the Montgomery County Law Enforcement Center and held on $300 bond.
