ROME, Ga. (AP) — Derek Fulton threw four touchdown passes and ran for another score to help Grand View win the NAIA championship in the Iowa school’s sixth year of football, 35-23 over the University of the Cumberlands on Saturday.

Fulton, a sophomore, completed 19 of 39 passes for 300 yards and ran 13 times for 74 yards as second-ranked Grand View completed a 14-0 season at the expense of top ranked Cumberlands (13-1). Fulton was selected the most outstanding offensive player, and Grand View senior linebacker Jason Gladfelder, who was in on 15 tackles, took defensive honors.

Cumberlands rushed for 309 yards, with D’Angelo Jordan gaining 128 yards on 17 carries, and Adam Craig getting 94 yards on 30 attempts. But the Kentucky school had only 60 yards passing, as Craig went 5 for 11 with an interception in Rome, Georgia.

Complaint alleges gender bias in U. Iowa track job

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — A discrimination complaint alleges that qualified male candidates were repeatedly passed over for an assistant job in the University of Iowa track program after athletic department administrators mandated that a woman be hired. The complaint filed by former Iowa assistant Mike Scott says that track and field director Larry Wieczorek joked during the hiring process that Scott should consider having a sex change operation to improve his prospects.

Scott alleges that, in their quest to hire a woman, administrators rejected a committee’s recommendation to offer the job to a highly qualified male candidate and twice rewrote the position description to try to attract more females. After three postings spanning more than one year, the university hired Molly Jones in September.

A university spokesman declined to respond to Scott’s allegations.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Ally Disterhoft scored 17 points and gathered nine rebounds to pace Number 22 Iowa over Drake 73-51 on Saturday. Iowa (11-2) shot 46 percent from the floor, but was just 4 of 26 from beyond the arc. Melissa Dixon added 13 points for the Hawkeyes while Samantha Logic went 6 of 7 for 12 points, pulled down 17 rebounds and handed out 10 assists. Drake (5-5) was led by Ashley Bartow with 16 points; Lizzy Wendell scored nine points for the Bulldogs and had 11 rebounds in the loss.

Iowa was only up four at intermission and maintained that margin almost five minutes into the second half. But the Hawkeyes went on a 15-0 run — including a trey by Theairra Taylor — to take control of the game. Drake shot just 20 percent from the floor and went 6 of 29 (20.7 percent) on 3-pointers in Iowa City.

Virginia defeats Northern Iowa 57-43

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — Justin Anderson helped Virginia shake off a lethargic start, leading the Cavaliers with 16 points, four rebounds and three assists in a 57-43 win over Northern Iowa on Saturday. Seth Tuttle led Northern Iowa with 14 points and 11 rebounds, and Wes Washpun added nine points and five assists in Charlottesville.

Virginia and Northern Iowa misfired early and often, but the Cavaliers (8-3) took control early in the second half. The Panthers (5-6) had to call a timeout only 2:20 into the second half after a Darion Adkins dunk and a London Perrantes jumper pushed Virginia to a 25-16 lead. The win broke a two-game losing streak for Virginia.

The Cavaliers scored only one basket in the first 6:50 of the game and yet never trailed. As much as Virginia struggled to score, Northern Iowa matched their misses, failing to score until Tuttle converted on a drive at the 15:45 mark.
