South Dakota trounces Div. III Iowa Wesleyan 86-52

VERMILLION, S.D. (AP) — Tyler Flack scored 16 points to pace South Dakota in its 86-52 win over Iowa Wesleyan on Saturday. South Dakota (5-9) got 15 points from Trevor Gruis, on 7 of 8 shooting, and 12 apiece from Brandon Bos and Adam Thoseby. The Coyotes shot 51 percent from the floor, including 7 of 17 from beyond the arc, and held a 43-24 advantage on the boards. Iowa Wesleyan, a Division III school, was led by Murray Schwengels with 13.

The Coyotes scored the game’s first eight points and later in the half had a 15-4 run as they built a 47-29 halftime advantage. An 11-point run to start the second half sealed Wesleyan’s fate as the lead grew to 27 points just 3:21 after the break. South Dakota held the Tigers scoreless over the game’s final 5:28.

EUGENE CLARK, 81, of Stuart, died Sat., Jan. 4th, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services for EUGENE CLARK will be held 2-p.m. Wed., Jan. 8th, at the Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield.

The family will greet friends from 5-to 7-pm Tuesday, at the funeral home. Online condolences may be left to the family at www.steenfunerals.com.

Memorials may be directed to the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

A luncheon at the Greenfield United Methodist Church will take place following the committal service in the Greenfield Cemetery.

His wife – Pauline Clarke, of Stuart.

His sons – Kendall (Val) Clarke, of Iowa Falls, & Kevin (Angie) Clarke, of Omaha.

6 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Braddyville woman arrested at the Page County Jail on Public Intox charge

A woman who came to visit an inmate at the Page County Jail Saturday afternoon nearly became an inmate herself, after it was determined she was under the influence of alcohol. Sheriff’s officials arrested 37-year old Lee Ann Gulbrandson, of Braddyville on a charge of Public Intoxication, after she came to the north door of the jail at around 1:15-p.m., smelling of alcohol.

Gulbrandson, who is also known as Lee Ann Bencker, was released from custody after posting a $300 bond.

KAREN LOUISE OWENS, 71, of Council Bluffs, died Thu., Jan. 2nd, at the Risen Son Christian Village. A Funeral service for KAREN OWENS will be held 1-p.m. Mon., Jan. 6th, at the Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Harlan.

Visitation at the funeral home is from 4-to 6-pm on Sunday.

Burial will be in the Harlan Cemetery.

KAREN OWENS is survived by:

Her daughter – Michelle (Terry) Cooper, of Council Bluffs.

Her son – Richard Schiembeck.

and her brothers – Ronald (Diane) Hulsebus, of Ellston, & Dean (Barb) Hulsebus, of Des Moines.

2 arrests made in Shelby County burglary

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office reports two people have been arrested in connection with a burglary that occurred last month. 59-year old Gerard Rueschenberg, of Westphalia and 58-year old Leann Grieder, of Harlan, have been charged with Burglary in the 3rd degree. Both were brought to the Shelby County Jail and later posted $5,000 bond each before being released.

Authorities say evidence discovered during a rural farm residence burglary on Dec. 20th resulted in a search warrant being executed Dec. 22nd at Rueschenberg’s residence in Westphalia. During the search, numerous items from the burglary were recovered. Additional items were recovered at the Grieder residence in Harlan on the same date.

Phil Everly, half of pioneer rock duo, dies at 74

Phil Everly, one half of the pioneering Everly Brothers harmony duo that sparked the imaginations of rock ‘n’ roll singers for decades, has died. He was 74. His son Jason Everly says his father died Friday at a Burbank hospital of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

In the late 1950s and 1960s, Everly and his brother Don molded rock ‘n’ roll with their high harmony while their poignant lyrics captured the restlessness and energy of a generation of young people. Their hit records included the then-titillating “Wake Up Little Susie” and the universally identifiable “Bye Bye Love.”

Their parents, Ike and Margaret Everly along with the boys, had a show on KMA radio and KFNF in Shenandoah in the 1940s.  Singing on the show gave the brothers their first exposure to the music industry. The family sang together and lived and traveled in the area singing as the Everly Family. The Everly Brothers grew up from ages 5 and 7 through early high school in Shenandoah.

In all, their career spanned five decades, although they performed separately from 1973 to 1983. In their heyday between 1957 and 1962, they had 19 top 40 hits.
