News

January 11th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

Police in Red Oak report the Red Oak Fire Department was dispatched early Saturday morning to a possible vehicle explosion near the intersection of North Broadway and West Linden Streets. The call came in at around 4:25-a.m.  When police and fire crews arrived, they found a maroon GMC Sierra pickup registered to 39-year old Ian Haas, of Red Oak. The vehicle was damaged by what was believed to be a possible explosive device.

An on-scene investigation was conducted, and officials say additional procedures were expected to be performed on the vehicle, which was seized by the Red Oak Police Department. Assistance was requested from the Iowa State Fire Marshals Office as part of the investigation.

No further information about the incident is currently available, while authorities continue with their investigation.

Iowa’s McCaffery is back, but are No. 3 Buckeyes?

Sports

January 11th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Iowa coach Fran McCaffery is coming back. It remains to be seen if No. 3 Ohio State’s swagger returns, too. McCaffery’s one-game suspension for his blow-up with the officials in a loss at No. 4 Wisconsin this week is behind him. He’ll be on the sideline when his 20th-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes travel to play the Buckeyes on Sunday afternoon.

Iowa has already rebounded from that loss to the Badgers, routing Northwestern 93-67 on Thursday. Now eyes will be trained on the Buckeyes to see if they can rally after suffering their first loss of the season, a 72-68 overtime defeat at No. 5 Michigan State on Tuesday night.

Ohio State’s players and coach Thad Matta realize they cannot afford a second straight slip.

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Buddy Hield scored 22 points and Ryan Spangler added 16 points and a career-high 15 rebounds to help Oklahoma knock off previously unbeaten Iowa State 87-82 Saturday. Isaiah Cousins added 17 points for the Sooners (13-3, 2-1 Big 12), who ended No. 9 Iowa State’s school-best winning streak at 14 games.

The Sooners won despite a rough day for Cameron Clark. The Big 12’s leading scorer finished with 12 points on 4-for-16 shooting. The Sooners were fine because they matched a season high with 13 3-pointers and outrebounded the Cyclones 41-34. Oklahoma had lost two of three and was coming off a 90-83 loss to Kansas on Wednesday.

DeAndre Kane had 23 points and nine rebounds and Melvin Ejim added 21 points and six rebounds for Iowa State (14-1, 2-1). Georges Niang scored 14 points and Dustin Hogue added 13 for the Cyclones.
