News

January 18th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

In an update to a story we brought you early Saturday morning, on KJAN.com and during our newscasts, one-person was seriously injured during a rollover accident near the Schildberg Quarry Recreational Area, in Atlantic. Atlantic Fire and Rescue and Medivac Ambulance crews were dispatched at around 1:13-a.m. to an area north of the bridge on Buck Creek Road, just before Glacier Road, for a passenger vehicle that had rolled over.

County County Sheriff’s Deputy Josh McLaren told KJAN News a 1993 Buick LeSabre driven by 19-year old Daniel Schmeling, of Atlantic, was traveling north on Buck Creek road and had just crossed the bridge onto the gravel, when the car went out of control and rolled near the northwest corner of the intersection with Glacier Road. One of the passengers, a 14-year old male, was partially ejected and  trapped under the vehicle. Another male passenger, age 18, suffered what are believed to have been minor injuries. Their names have not been released.

McLaren said while alcohol was NOT a factor in the crash, the accident remains under investigation.

Pork producers mull cost of eliminating sow crates

Ag/Outdoor

January 18th, 2014 by admin

AMES, Iowa (AP) – As the use of small crates to confine pregnant sows is phased out in large-scale pig operations, an Iowa State University swine expert says pork producers have some difficult and potentially costly decisions to make about how to handle pregnant sows.

Tyson Foods and Smithfield Foods, two leading pork producers, are moving away from using gestation crates, small enclosures which limit movement of pregnant sows.

Increasing pressure from retailers, consumers, and animal rights activists is forcing the change.

Iowa State University swine veterinarian James McKean says allowing multiple sows to share more spacious pens requires producers to retrofit existing facilities or build new ones, which could be expensive.

The European Union banned the use of gestation crates last year and other countries are considering similar polices.

January 18th, 2014 by admin

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa officials want people to know where snowplows are working during winter weather.

The state Department of Transportation is offering an interactive online map that shows where the vehicles are currently located. It’s under the agency’s winter driving section.

When snowplow icons are clicked, a visitor can see where its location was last reported and what direction it was headed. It also gives the reported air temperature.

Data is fed automatically every two minutes from the snowplows.

The map is available via desktop or mobile device.
