Traffic stop in Griswold leads to 4 hour high speed chase & search

News

January 21st, 2014 by Ric Hanson

A traffic stop that began at around 9:30-p.m. Monday in Griswold ended in Page County nearly 4-hours later following a high-speed chase and search. According to the State Patrol Communications Center near Lewis, the incident began when a Cass County deputy attempted to stop a Chevy pickup in Griswold. The vehicle and two persons inside took off and led authorities on a chase into Mongtomery County and the City’s of Elliott and Clarinda before ending near Clarinda, in Page County. The suspects bailed out of their disabled vehicle and tried to hide from authorities, who apprehended them at around 1:24-a.m. in a cornfield west of Clarinda.

Numerous law enforcement vehicles were damaged during the chase when the suspects’ pickup “rammed” or came into contact with those vehicles. Other patrol vehicles sustained blown tires during the chase. At times, speeds during the chase were in excess of 100-miles per hour. Cass County Deputies Ben Bartholomew, Josh McLaren and Kyle Quist were all involved in the pursuit.

The suspects were brought to the Clarinda Regional Medical Center for treatment of hypothermia before being transported to the jail. Their names and additional details are currently not available. No law enforcement officers were injured during the pursuit, but their lives were in danger many times, according to law enforcement sources.

Power Farming Show to include cover crop workshops

Ag/Outdoor

January 21st, 2014 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Farmers attending the Iowa Power Farming Show next week in Des Moines will get a chance to learn about promoting soil conservation and health by planting cover crops. Cover crops are plants seeded on corn and soybean fields during the off season to help control weeds, prevent soil erosion, and promote soil health.

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey says the workshops hosted by Iowa Farm Bureau will help farmers find direction on choosing the right cover crop seeds, receive information on application and termination of cover crops, and learn more about how cover crops fit with a livestock operation.

The Iowa Power Farming Show runs Jan. 28 through 30 at Iowa Events Center. It is expected to draw 20,000 people to see the latest in farm equipment and technology.

Cards’ Holliday happy to have Peralta as teammate

Sports

January 21st, 2014 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Matt Holliday has been an outspoken critic of players who have used performance-enhancing drugs. He is willing to forgive and forget when it comes to Jhonny Peralta, his new St. Louis Cardinals teammate.

The Cardinals’ new shortstop was suspended last summer along as part of Major League Baseball’s investigation into the Biogenesis clinic. Peralta served a 50-game drug suspension and returned to the Tigers at the end of the regular season before signing a $53 million, four-year contract with St. Louis in November.

Holliday says Peralta served his suspension and welcomes him to the team.

Chiefs’ Johnson, Smith added to Pro Bowl

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson and quarterback Alex Smith were chosen Monday to replace 49ers linebacker NaVorro Bowman and Patriots quarterback Tom Brady in the Pro Bowl. The two substitutions means Kansas City will be sending 10 players to Hawaii.

Bowman tore the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his left knee in Sunday’s NFC championship loss to Seattle. Brady bowed out of the all-star game one day after New England lost to Denver in the AFC championship. This will be Johnson’s third straight Pro Bowl, while Smith will be headed to his first.

They’ll be joined in Hawaii by Chiefs left tackle Branden Albert, safety Eric Berry, running back Jamaal Charles, cornerback Brandon Flowers, defensive tackle Dontari Poe, punt returner Dexter McCluster and linebackers Tamba Hali and Justin Houston. Charles is among four player captains picked for the Jan. 26 game.
