Senate panel likely to continue, broaden inquiry

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Senate Democratic leaders say their questions about government payments to former workers for secrecy and other issues will continue after the Legislature adjourns for the year.  While lawmakers appear to be on track to end the session within a few weeks, the Senate Government Oversight Committee is likely to keep pursuing the matter.

Democratic Sen. Janet Petersen, who chairs the oversight committee, has set the next hearing for Monday afternoon, when two Department of Administrative Services officials who declined to testify last week say they will appear. They are Doug Woodley, the agency’s general services enterprise chief operating officer, and Paul Carlson, the chief resource maximization officer.

Peterson says she wants to know more about settlement agreements and how the state handled layoffs during 2011 restructuring.

ST. LOUIS (AP) – The St. Louis Cardinals extended the contract of general manager John Mozeliak for two years through the 2018 season.  Mozeliak, 45, has been with the Cardinals organization for the last 19 seasons, the last six as GM. During Mozeliak’s tenure, the Cardinals have been to the postseason four times, winning two National League pennants, and a World Series in 2011.

The Cardinals have also been recognized twice by Baseball America as the organization of the year (2011 and 2013).

Young WRs shine in open Iowa workout

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa’s coaching staff has at times raved about its crop of redshirt freshman wide receivers.  Hawkeyes fans in central Iowa on Saturday got to see why the unit appears to have such a bright future.

Newcomer Andre Harris caught a pair of long touchdown passes at an open workout at Valley High in West Des Moines, about 120 miles from campus. Derrick Willies added another TD following broken coverage, and A.J. Jones and Derrick Mitchell Jr. certainly looked ready to compete for playing time next fall.

The Hawkeyes have plenty of depth at wide receiver. But senior Kevonte Martin-Manley is the only one who’s proven he can be a consistent threat – and even he had just 388 yards last season.

QB Rohach shines in Iowa State spring game

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Grant Rohach made a strong case for himself in Iowa State’s spring game Saturday in the Cyclones’ seemingly annual competition for the starting quarterback job.

Rohach outshone Sam Richardson and Joel Lanning on a warm, windy day, completing 22 of 38 passes for 171 yards and two interceptions. He led three scoring drives — two touchdowns and a field goal — and scored one of the TDs himself from 8 yards out on a nifty read option.

With two more spring practices remaining, coach Paul Rhoads said no decision has been made on a starter.

Red Oak man injured during motorcycle crash not discovered until Sat.

News

April 12th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

(Authorities have corrected victims’ name to Thomas Anderson, not Richard Anderson)

In a report released Saturday night, Police in Council Bluffs said a Montgomery County man was injured during a motorcycle accident that happened sometime Thursday night near Council Bluffs City limits. 55-year old Thomas Anderson, of Red Oak, was riding a motorcycle northbound on Interstate 29 when he was cut-off by a semi. The cycle crashed into the ditch east of the interstate at about the 47.2-mile marker. The accident was discovered by a passing motorist Saturday, who called 9-1-1 after he saw the cycle, pulled over to investigate, and found Anderson lying nearby. Officials say the man was not visible from the road.

Council Bluffs Fire and Rescue responded and transported Anderson to Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha. The man was conscious and breathing and is believed to have suffered non-life threatening injuries. There was no further information available on the semi.
