Story County fatal

News

February 2nd, 2014 by Ric Hanson

One person was killed, another injured during a collision Saturday morning in central Iowa’s Story County. The Iowa State Patrol says a 2004 Ford pickup truck driven by 53-year old Gregory Shaa, of Steamboat Rock, was traveling south on Interstate 29 at around 9:40-a.m., when the vehicle went out of control due to icy roads. The pickup crossed the median, spun around and slid south in the northbound lanes of I-35, where it was rear-ended by a semi traveling at about 45-miles per hour.

The force of the impact sent the pickup back into the median, and it caused Shaa to be ejected from the vehicle, even though he was wearing his seat belt. Shaa was transported by ambulance to Mary Greeley/Methodist Hospital, in Ames. A report on his condition is not available. A passenger in the pickup, 52-year old Stuart Leslee Pettigrew, of Eldora, who was wearing a seat belt, died from his injuries at the hospital in Ames.

The driver of the semi, 71-year old Wayne Hurtig, of Eden Prarie, MN, was not injured.

GOP candidates gear up for Senate primary

News

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — As the 2014 election cycle takes shape, no clear leader has broken out in the Republican race to take on Democrat Bruce Braley in the fall. At least six candidates are competing to run against Braley, a congressman from Waterloo and only Democrat in the field. Republicans hope that weak approval ratings for President Barack Obama and his policies will boost the GOP’s chances for the seat being vacated by Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin.

Some of the state’s top Republican office-holders didn’t run, opening the doors for the lesser-known candidates, including radio host Sam Clovis; state Sen. Joni Ernst; former energy company CEO Mark Jacobs; former U.S. Attorney Matt Whitaker; lawyer Paul Lunde; and former car salesman Scott Schaben. Conservative activist Bob Vander Plaats says he’s considering a bid.
