EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) – D.J. Balentine scored 23 points and had seven assists in Evansville’s final home game as the Aces beat Drake 61-48 on Tuesday. Blake Simmons added 13 points for Evansville (12-18, 5-12 Missouri Valley Conference) and Egidiju Mockevicius was held scoreless, but grabbed 10 rebounds. Balentine made four 3-pointers as Evansville hit 6 of 12 from deep. Evansville ended a three-game losing streak and pulled itself out of the conference cellar.
Ten players scored for Drake (14-15, 5-12) but none were in double-figures. Daddy Ugbede had seven, on 3-of-8 shooting, and Jordan Daniels made two of Drake’s four 3-pointers, in a combined 16 attempts. The Bulldogs made just 6 of 20 second-half baskets and were limited to 18 points after the break.
Evansville held the Bulldogs without a basket for nearly 11 minutes, spanning both halves, and led by double-digits for the final 10 minutes.
A passenger in a car that was struck by a pickup truck Tuesday morning in Villisca, was sent to the hospital for treatment of possible injuries. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office reports 43-year old Keith Currin, of Villisca, was transported by Villisca Rescue to the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital following the crash, which occurred at around 8:50-a.m., at the intersection of 3rd Avenue and 1st Street, in Villisca.
Authorities say a 2006 Buick owned and operated by 77-year old Phillip Currin, of Villisca, was headed north on 3rd Aveneue, and had stopped at the intersection. A 2011 GMC pickup owned and operate by 62-year old Donald Myers, of Villisca, was traveling east on 1st Street, and also stopped at the intersection. Myers failed to see the Currin vehicle, and proceeded into the intersection, hitting the car on its left rear side, and causing it to veer to the left before the Buick hit a fire hydrant.
Damage from the crash was estimated at $4,500 altogether. The City of Villisca’s fire hydrant appeared to be undamaged, according to officials. Myers was cited for Failure to Obey a Stop Sign. Deputies were assisted at the scene by personnel with the Villisca and Red Oak Fire and Rescue Departments.
KERMIT F. MARCUSSEN, 100, of Harlan, died Tue., Feb. 25th, in Harlan. Memorial services for KERMIT MARCUSSEN will be held 3-p.m. Fri., Feb. 28th, at the Burmeister-Johannsen Funeral Home in Harlan.
Burial will be in the Neola Township Cemetery at Neola.

A Treynor woman who has used the services of the Treynor Volunteer Fire Department over the years has expressed her gratitude through a donation of $2,500. The Daily NonPareil reports Jolene Lammert‘s home caught fire twice over the years, and just a few years ago, her father-in-law was involved in a tractor accident. But every time, volunteer firefighters came to her aid. The 55-year-old woman still lives in that house, and her father is currently in good health.
On Monday, Jolene and her husband, Ron, donated $2,500 to the fire department to help pay for new hydraulic rescue tools. Lammert received the money when she was chosen by America’s Farmers Grow Communities as a winner for Pottawattamie County. The group works with farmers to support rural communities. Lammert entered the contest and, upon winning, was allowed to donate her prize to the organization of her choosing.
Fire Chief Russ Maguire said the funds will be used toward the $24,000 needed to replace the department’s aging rescue tools. Fire officials are looking to obtain a $10,000 grant from the Iowa West Foundation to assist with the equipment. The department will pay the difference.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Hall of Fame quarterback and broadcaster Len Dawson will be honored with the Lamar Hunt Award for Professional Football at the 101 Awards gala on Saturday. The award was created in 2007 to honor the life and legacy of the Chiefs founder. It goes to an individual or group that has played a role in shaping the NFL.
Dawson led the Chiefs to its only Super Bowl championship and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1987. He began broadcasting Chiefs games in 1985, and in 2012 was awarded the hall’s Pete Rozelle Award for radio and television contributions.
Previous winners include The Foolish Club, the name taken on by the eight original AFL owners; coaches Tony Dungy and Don Shula; quarterback Roger Staubach; and Monday Night Football.
JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Jaime Garcia will seek a second opinion on his surgically repaired shoulder from Dr. James Andrews before deciding his next course of action, St. Louis General Manager John Mozeliak said on Tuesday. Garcia requested the second opinion even before consulting with Cardinals team doctors.
Mozeliak didn’t go into detail about the findings of Garcia’s Monday exam, other to say that the initial results were encouraging. “Based on the MRI and overall, we feel good,” Mozeliak said. “I would like to see what the other doctor has to say and we will go from there.”
