Thomas Gipson and D.J. Johnson added 12 points apiece for the Wildcats (20-9, 10-6 Big 12), who can still earn the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament. They play at Oklahoma State on Monday and then host Baylor on Saturday to end the regular season.

Kansas State has won 15 straight at Bramlage Coliseum, its longest home winning streak since the 1981-82 season.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Richard Carter, who finished with 18 points, hit a jump shot and made two free throws in the final 14 seconds to give Drake a 71-66 victory over Bradley Saturday.

Lynn solid for Cardinals, Marlins win 5-4

Sports

March 1st, 2014 by Ric Hanson

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Cardinals starter Lance Lynn allowed one hit in two shutout innings Saturday as a split squad of Miami Marlins beat St. Louis 5-4. Lynn is coming off his first season of pitching at least 200 innings. He says he hasn’t experienced any ill effects following that workload. The Marlins won on Avery Romero’s game-ending single in the ninth. St. Louis hit Nathan Eovaldi hard but only managed one run off the Marlins starter.

Randal Grichuk, acquired in the trade that sent David Freese to the Angels, appeared to be fooled by Eovaldi’s offspeed pitch yet still generated enough power with a one-handed swing to send a line drive over the head of center fielder Marcell Ozuna for an RBI triple. Miami scored four times in the fourth, with Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Greg Dobbs, Jeff Mathis and Ozuna all getting RBIs. Scott Moore’s solo homer in the Cardinals eighth made it 4-all.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) — Seth Tuttle scored 23 points Saturday as Northern Iowa beat Indiana State 71-69 in a game in which both teams lost double-digit leads. Indiana State (21-9, 12-16 Missouri Valley) had a chance to win, but Jake Odum’s 3-point try at the buzzer missed.

The win guarantees Northern Iowa (16-14, 10-8) the No. 3 seed in the MVC Tournament and gives coach Ben Jacobson his 166th victory, tying him with O.M. “Hon” Nordly (1938-43 and 1946-54) for all-time UNI wins. Nate Buss scored 14 and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Panthers and Deon Mitchell scored 10.

Odum led the Sycamores with 16, Khristian Smith had 15, Manny Arop and Dawon Cumming scored 10 apiece and Arop grabbed 11 rebounds. Northern Iowa had a 27-17 first-half lead, but Indiana State rallied to lead 39-35 at halftime. The Sycamores’ 11-point second-half lead fizzled and Tuttle’s 3 at 3:37 put Northern Iowa up 70-67.

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — A Mexican national convicted of vehicular homicide for a crash that killed a Council Bluffs teenager has been sentenced to up to 25 years in prison. The Daily Nonpareil of Council Bluffs reports that Hilberto Velasquez-Ramirez was sentenced Thursday in Pottawattamie County’s District Court.

Prosecutors say Velasquez-Ramirez was drunk when he crashed his minivan into a car full of teens on July 5, killing 17-year-old Chrishaun Moten. Two other teens were seriously injured in the crash. A 16-year-old girl in the car told authorities that Velasquez-Ramirez, who was not hurt in the crash, refused to call 911 and that she had to take his keys to keep him from driving away from the crash scene.
