IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa football team’s new indoor practice building and operations center will be named after some of the program’s biggest donors. The Iowa Board of Regents agreed Wednesday to name the indoor practice facility to honor Stew and LeNore Hansen, who donated $8 million to the program’s fundraising campaign. Stew Hansen is the former president of a namesake Des Moines car dealership that was sold in 2006.

The regents also named the football operations building, which is under construction, after Richard O. Jacobson, chairman emeritus of the Jacobson Companies. Jacobson has supported the Hawkeyes for decades and donated millions to a number of university programs.

The building will include space for team activities, a strength and conditioning area, locker rooms, and office space for coaches and support staffs.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs signed linebacker Joe Mays and offensive lineman Joe Linkenbach on Wednesday, while also confirming the signing of defensive back and special teams standout Husain Abdullah. Linkenbach joined the Colts as an undrafted free agent in 2010, and started all 16 games the following season. He only started eight games in 2012 and five last season.

His ability to play tackle and guard on both sides of the line made him appealing to the Chiefs, who lost left tackle Branden Albert and guards Jon Asamoah and Geoff Schwartz on Tuesday. Mays could take the place of Akeem Jordan, who also became a free agent. He was drafted by current Chiefs coach Andy Reid when he was in Philadelphia in 2008.

Abdullah had agreed to a contract on Tuesday.

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (AP) — Kolten Wong hit a two-run homer for the second straight day, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the New York Mets 6-4 Wednesday. Wong went 2 for 4 with a long home run to right off Kyle Farnsworth in the seventh that made it 4-0. Stephen Piscotty went 2 for 3 with a double and triple. Juan Lagares had a two-run single for the Mets.

Cardinals starter Carlos Martinez, competing to be in the club’s starting rotation, allowed two hits in four scoreless innings and struck out three. Mets starter John Lannan, a non-roster invitee competing to be New York’s fifth starter, gave up two runs — both unearned — and three hits in four innings. He struck out five and walked none.

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State senior Melvin Ejim has been named a United State Basketball Writers Association Second-Team All-American, the organization announced Wednesday. Ejim is also a finalist for the Oscar Robertson Trophy, which is presented by the USBWA.

It is the second All-America honor for Ejim, who was recognized as an NBCSports.com third-team pick on Monday. Ejim is the first USBWA All-American for Iowa State since Jamaal Tinsley in 2001.

Ejim, a forward from Toronto, Ontario, averaged 18.2 points and 8.6 rebounds en route to being named the Big 12 Player of the Year. Ejim has scored in double figures in 25 of the 28 games he’s played this season, including a Big 12 record 48 points against TCU.

In the regular-season finale against Oklahoma State, Ejim became just the fourth player in Big 12 history to score 1,500 points and grab 1,000 rebounds.

Ejim and teammate DeAndre Kane were also named All-District 8 First Team by the National Association of Basketball Coaches on Wednesday.
