Cardinals hand slumping Braves 7th straight loss

ATLANTA (AP) — Matt Carpenter’s two-run double in the fifth inning helped carry the St. Louis Cardinals past the slumping Atlanta Braves, who shook up their lineup but still lost their seventh in a row, 4-3 Monday night. Desperate for more offense, Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez batted pitcher Aaron Harang eighth and put second baseman Ramiro Pena in the ninth spot.

Pena had two hits, including a seventh-inning homer that brought the Braves within a run, but they couldn’t overcome a 4-0 deficit. Taking advantage of shaky defense, Carpenter doubled in two runs and Matt Holiday followed with a run-scoring single. Peter Bourjos had an RBI single in the sixth to extend St. Louis’ lead.

Shelby Miller (4-2) got the win and Trevor Rosenthal earned his ninth save. Harang (3-3) took the loss.

Rollover accident east of Cumberland Mon. night

One person was critically injured during a single-vehicle rollover accident late Monday night, east of Cumberland. According to dispatch reports, Cumberland Fire and Rescue and Medivac Ambulance were called to the scene at around 10:54-p.m.

The lone male occupant of the vehicle was transported to the Cass County Memorial Hospital. A Life Flight helicopter was launched from Clarinda and was enroute to CCMH just before 11:30-p.m.

No other details were available late Monday night, as the accident remained under investigation.

Iowa, Nebraska farmers say corn planting on track

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa and Nebraska farmers say they’re still on track to get their corn planted despite cold, wet weather that slowed their start to the planting season. Numbers released Monday from the U.S. Department of Agriculture show 23 percent of Iowa’s corn crop has been planted. That’s up significantly from last week’s 15 percent planted.

The percentage likely will rise quickly this week, as farmers have several warm, dry days before rain returns to the forecast. Chad Hart, an Iowa State University agriculture economist, says it’s crucial for farmers to get their crop planted in the coming weeks. He says corn should be in the ground by late April to early May.

Nebraska is closer to completion, with 44 percent of its corn crop planted.

Cass County Supervisors to act on the vacating of 740th St.

The Cass County Board of Supervisors will meet Tuesday morning, in Atlantic. During their session, which begins at 8:30, the Board will act on approving a wage adjustment for Mental Health/General Assistance Director Deb Schuler. They’ll also act on a Resolution calling for a hearing on the vacating of a portion of 740th Street, located between Sections 8 and 9 and Sections 16 and 17, Massena Township. The sections near Pella and Oxford Roads. The length of road to be vacated is about 1.5-miles.

And in other business, the Board will act on approving the plans for a bridge replacement project on Jackson Road, about one-eighth of a mile east of 648th Street.

Montgomery County Officials Recover Stolen Trailer

Authorities in Montgomery County say a trailer reported stolen this past March from Pottawattamie County, was recovered Monday in a wooded area near 137th and K Avenue, in Montgomery County. The 2013 Diamond T trailer reported stolen from Environmental Maintenance Service Inc., of DeWitt, NE., was discovered at around 10:00-a.m., thanks to a tip from a citizen. An investigation into the incident continues.

Montgomery County Sheriffs Office Investigates Single Vehicle Accident

No injuries were reported following a single-vehicle accident Sunday evening, in Montgomery County. Sheriff’s officials say the accident happened near Elliott at around 7:45-p.m., on Highway 48 at Kirkwood Avenue. Officials say for reasons unknown, a 1986 Mercury Cougar driven by 58-year old Elaine Alexander, of Elliott, entered the north ditch. Alexander was subsequently charged with OWI and held on bond. There was no damage to her vehicle.

State disaster official advises storm readiness

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The state’s top disaster services official says the death of two Iowans in April 27 storms highlights the need to develop a storm preparedness plan. Mark Schouten, Iowa’s emergency management director recommends Iowans stay aware by keeping a battery operated radio or a cell phone with a storm alert application nearby. Families should have emergency plans and emergency storm kits ready.

Schouten says the Keokuk County storm in late April was not identified as a tornado by the National Weather Service until after a second person died. One woman was killed near Martinsburg, the other near Kinross. Both were caught outside when winds hit.

Schouten says Iowa has built an increasing number of school tornado safe rooms with 33 completed projects and funding approved for more.
